Errr the R1 has been around for awhile, that is the chassis that Prodrive used to make the P2.

Edit: I should probably add that it was in the Japanese market though.

That was just a proof of concept that they showed off at NYC last year, I highly doubt you'd see the production car being that small here.

It's possible (think smart competitor) but doubtful

Then again, since when did subaru start making decisions that would make sense on the surface.

I've been driving a Toyota Prius rental for 3 weeks now. I HATE IT!!! What are they thinking?
Well maybe they can put a turbo in the electric motor somehow and give it some kick! I wonder if this thing will be able to be Mod'd lMAO ! Subie Cutie.. this is America the last time I checked. Nobody is going to force you to purchase one of these things. We have something here called freedom of choice. Last summer when gas was selling for four bucks a gallon lots of folks apparently really liked the Prius. Currently only Ford, Honduh, and Toyota have a decent hybrid. I think its nice that Toyota is sharing some of it's technology with Subaru.

FWIW I would much rather drive around in one of those Prius hampster mobiles than the rental Chevy Cobolt I was couped up in last summer. That thing was an excellent example of why GM is now bankrupt.

EDIT: Maybe I was wrong about this whole "freedom of choice" stuff. What with Obama wondering about how to pay for all his health care stuff, it wouldnt surprise me to see a massive increase in the gasoline tax get tacked on to the bill. When gas reaches seven bucks a gallon most of us will be bicycling to work. Those of us with one of those cute little half-baked hybrids models might be the lucky ones.

I never stated that I was going to be forced into one of these although I basically was w/ this rental (which I'll give props too cuz it has been saving my pocket on gas like crazy these past few weeks!). I was just practicing my American constitutional right w/ voicing my opinion on how I felt about this new car in the makings.

Toyota already has one so I dont even understand why subaru would make the same thing.... but Anyway, My concern w/ this whole subaru prius thing is that they haven't stated if it will be an AWD vehicle, and we all know thats the whole subaru "thing" is that ALL their vehicles are AWD. Toyota throwing their two cents in might convince them to change that. (which they already have w/ the new RWD coupe they are working on) Also they havent mentioned if they will be using the boxer engines along w/ the electric motors in these things. If this is the case I just feel that it will be bringing the subaru values and morals down a bit.

For those people who are looking forward to driving a big kids subaru power wheel, enjoy!

Maybe if obama let me "cash in" my stupid social security I would be able to purchase a hybrid car.

So on the subie hybrid tip - Tokyo will be debuting the subaru hybrid concept this month. It's not a prius but a Tourer. This thing is actually pretty cool. They are putting a 2.0 turbo wrx engine in it. I dunno about the butterfly doors but besides that it looks much nicer than other hybrids out there.

I'd rock that over an actual Prius any day ;)

I would never rock that. That looks like the Smart cars. My friend and I saw one of those at the mall one time on display. It is so crappy its not funny. You could push on the side of it and make HUGE dents in it.

We got kicked out of the mall for that.

Smart cars look so..... I dunno.

When I see it from far away the logo "SMART" turns into "SNOT"

Yea, and if you talk to someone who drives one, the owner goes from being a "SMART" owner to a "SNOTTY" owner too.

Heres a new toyota concept. Its basically toyota and subaru's creation. Based off the corolla based coupe from the 80's they plan on dropping a 2.0 liter subaru boxer engine in it!! oooooo-la-la

The subie prius looked more like a glorified golf cart, now the tourer on the other hand is pretty nice looking although I will never buy one. If I ever feel so inlcined to save gas money I'll buy a horse! They're cheaper and last longer and they may be slower but unless I'm driving cross country then why not? :) Besides, how much money are you really saving on gas when you buy a BRAND NEW CAR! All 3 of my SVX's cost me less than 5,000 each. Even combining what I paid for all 3 is less than what a new car costs. Now you might say a new car won't have to be fixed as much as an old car. This is true, but again the extra money you spend on a new car is the same as repairs for an old one actually less if you buy a dependable car...like a Subaru :) You would be surprised how many SVX on the road everyday have over 300,000 miles on them and still running strong. I'm about to hit 150,000 myself :) I guess my point is you can win either way it just depends on which way you look at the glass.

i agree buying a new car is expensive, the new prius starts at 23, and if you're buying a new car i can almost guarantee you don't want the base model, also i doubt all those prius drivers on the freeway going 85 are saving that much gas. i'm not saying they don't get good mpg, but you have to drive it very conservatively to get the maximum, i think my biggest problem is how it seems like because it's a hybrid they have to make it look as weird, small, and bubbly as possible. i wish someone would make a decent looking hybrid. maybe then id jump on the band wagon, until then ill fill my house with energy saving light bulbs and continue to recycle and compost.

The Honda CRZ is a 2-door Hybrid sports car. Similar in concept to the older Civic CRX. It is due out in America some time mid-year 2010.

Sorry about the questionable "Engrish" translation :
