View Full Version : Launching ... burning plastic smell

I tried to do a couple of launches (I wouldn't really call them that ... more like a hard start from zero mph).

In one case I KNOW I screwed it up because I unconsciously kept the foot on the clutch a smidge too long and the smell of plastic afterwards that floated in the car for a good 5 minutes was probably my clutch calling me a bone-head.

Which I am, for the record.

So, after much personal shame and self-flagellating for being a complete idiot and promising myself I would NEVER attempt to do another launch in my life because I am an idiot and I don't deserve a car so good, etc, etc ...

... well, of course, inevitably I had to try again.

This time I made as much as possible a conscious effort to pull my left foot off the damn clutch.

This time it went much better (I think) but a tiny smell of plastic still lingered for a minute. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as the first (shameful) attempt but it was still undoubtedly there. Very very little of it ... but still there (no my tires didn't spin ... )

First question: is it normal to "smell clutch" after a launch even if it's done impeccably? Keep in mind ... I don't plan to BURN my car. I just want to try a launch once in a while ... so if that burnt plastic smell is normal ... so be it. It just means I will try to avoid doing launches as much as I can. If it's not normal and a perfect launch shouldn't smell like anything other than adrenaline and fun and chocholate ice cream, then I am doing something wrong and I am going to stop until I can find somebody that can teach me how to do it right.

PS: I am not silly enough to think that a launch is NOT hard on the car. I know it is ... it's just that I have NEVER launched a car in my life. Period. Since I never owned sports car ...

Second question: I don't know why it's so hard for me to pull my foot off the clutch. It's almost some kind of psychological block. I am telling my foot to lift off and get off the clutch and my foot is really not listening very well. Is anyone else experiencing this ... interesting psychological issue? or is it just me?

PS: one thing to add to this is that I have been driving manual for all my life ... been driving manual for more than 20 years (yes I F---ING old). So ... I wouldn't put it past myself to have developed some nasty habits that in normal European beaters (I'm from Europe) don't make much of a difference. With a REAL car? yeah ... gotta change my habits.

Thanks for any light you can shed on my noob-ness!

:)

Just throwing something out there that it might be besides a clutch problem but probably not if you are only smelling it upon launch. Make sure there is not a plastic bag stuck under your car somewhere. Once I kept smelling burning plastic and I couldn't figure out what it was. Turns out I had driven over a grocery bag and it was actually caught underneath on my exhaust system and was melting and burning off.

Clutch smell is VERY distinct... (at least to me it is). You must have smelled it while learning to drive?

you mean 20 years ago?

Never ... but then again I never tried to launch anything. The most powerful car I ever drove in europe was a beat up Golf diesel ... didn't even have a turbo ... not exactly a muscle car.

Can you imagine trying to launch an 83 VW Golf Diesel? I once saw a turtle ... it was going faster than me.

Plus the smell in that car was ... interesting. Smelling clutch in that miasma would have been the equivalent of trying to figure out who dropped a stink bomb in hell ... good luck.

Hmmm... well, sounds like it was just the clutch... force it to slip (for experimental purposes) so you can see what it smells like?

AWD cars are much harder to launch than FWD or RWD cars in my experience. I envy you for your 6 speed that can actually take launches. with 288hp and 322tq to the all wheels on my Legacy GT the 5 speed I currently have in it would shit its pants...

I burned out my OEM clutch in my 08 STI in 14,400 miles. But that was from launching it at about 6000 RPMs at the track. No, you shouldn't smell clutch on a proper launch (or at least I didn't). You definitely know when u smoke the clutch. It's very distinct aweful smell.

Launching takes practice to get right.

Much easier IMO to do in the dirt vs pavement

and yup!! chances are you may toast your clutch in the process of learning

Just be ready to $pend to fix the clutch if you're going to launch often :)

This. I have yet to launch my car for fear of toasting it then having to buy a new one. However, burning clutch smell doesn't really remind me of burning plastic.

...

That's why I like to hang out around here ... you girls have the best of ideas.

Good idea ... I'm going to try that instead ...

As everyone said, better to let the tires spin than the clutch burn ..

lolz. here's the vid of me when I burned out my clutch and blew my motor at the track. First run of the season too. Didn't realize the motor blew because the clutch over powered it...

It maybe the AC hose, if it is sitting next to your down pipe. When my down pipe gets really hot that hose burns and gives off an aweful smell. I think it may be gone now, and that is just from driving it hard, not from launches(well who knows the BF probably launched it too).

Good luck getting launches down, I wouldn't have the guts to.
