So I posted a thread on nasioc for advice on what I should do about a friend who just got engaged to a drug dealer. Finally a mod ended it after 9 pages of sexual harassment, and guys finding pictures of me I didn't even get from that photoshoot, pictures i've never even seen before. Overall it made me feel gross. Even though I know I shouldn't. All I wanted was simple advice, and because I'm a girl I got guys saying the nastiest things. Why can't guys on forums just treat us like equals instead of pieces of meat. I'm definitely not a feminist, but really that stuff annoys me. Especially when it was allowed to go on for so long when I kept asking the mods to end it. I think I quit nasioc. Just wanted to vent a little. Because even though this is the internet and I shouldn't care etc, it does make me feel bad. And I don't think that's ok.

I'm sorry you had to go through that on Nasioc. Most of time there are some good guys on Nasioc. It's most definitey not okay and it shouldn't have lasted so long. But unfortuntately as soon as some of the guys on Nasioc see that there's a lady there they go nuts wanting pics of her so they can oogle. And in regards to the friend, just be her friend and support her as best as you can. She is gonna make her own bed, it's up to her whether she chooses to lay in it or not. Love is blind (sometimes for the worse).

Yeah, the kaiser guy is nice. Not a perv like the rest. What I don't understand is they say oh there's no newbie bashing, but women bashing is ok.

And yeah, it's hard to accept but i'll be there and I won't say "I told you so" when it goes bad.

wow... just wow. i'm really sorry that happened to you. i don't blame you for feeling bad about it, just because it's the internet doesn't make it ok. you should NEVER feel that way. you didn't put yourself out there saying "hey look at these pics of me" so they had no right to do that. most people avoid nasioc for these very reasons.

i agree with just being supportive for your friend... she will come to her senses someday if she has supportive people around her. who knows, maybe this guy will change his act and turn his life around. no telling not knowing. :)

either way, i would just stick to subie girls... i never go on nasioc unless it's for subie girls stuff or classifieds.

NASIOC boys strike again! Sorry to hear about it though.

I have a NASIOC account, but I havn't posted once. Not even an introduction thread because I see guys just going "ooooh.... boobs" WAY too often. I know theres a bunch of great guys in the subie community, but theres still a truckload of guys who can't seem to get past the 5 year old facination that theres a girl on there. Most of them probably still think girls have cooties or something.

Sigh.... /rant

Your friend will be alright. While you may not agree with her, she has made up the decison to stick with this guy and noones gonna change her mind accept her. +1 for all the support comments. Tis all ya can do.

Natalie, I think it's horrible that this happened. I'd be interested in reading the thread if you'd like to post a link.

I've been lucky enough to not have this problem on NASIOC so far. Unfortunately, not everyone there is nice. Just from reading what you said in your post here, it was 100% unnecessary for you to be sexually harassed just for being a female.

Really what it comes down to, is that these guys (boys really) would NEVER act that way or say things like that to their wives/girl friends/significant others. They are KEYBOARD WARRIORS that pick on women like you to make themselves feel like they are bigger/stronger/in charge. You have every right to feel upset/angry and don't need to apologize for venting here.

As for "not being a feminist," I am one and I just wanted to say that believing in equal rights and respect as a woman is nothing to be embarrassed about. There are many different kinds of feminists that focus on different issues. Radical feminism, ("man-hating" or "bra-burning" mentality) tends to be the view most people think feminists take. I love men, couldn't imagine living without my bras and am proud to be a feminist!! </rant>

That being said, this is why we built SubieGirls.com, so that women have a place to turn that's inviting. Glad it's your favorite. :D

As for your friend, I think it's too bad that they are engaged to a drug dealer. Hopefully the drug dealer gets out of it, but really, you can't expect people to change their ways. I hope that she is able to safely get out of what could potentially be a bad situation on her own terms. You just need to be there for her. It wouldn't be horrible to tell her you are worried/concerned but you can't make her change her mind.

I'd send you the thread if I could but after the 3rd time asking, I pm'd a mod and told him to delete it. It took them forever, some guy even posted that he just "came". Others called me a whore and said I didn't have class because of the pictures they found. Which btw are the ones on here, plus one I posted, which I don't mind so much except I didn't post them in that thread, I posted them in related threads, but one found another one from the shoot that was a picture of my trunk with me not facing the camera, and then came the butt comments saying how I was gonna be a lot wider in my late 20's. Then when I politely asked them to stop and if they couldn't give advice instead of asking for pics of my boobs then they should get off they told me I should have expected this. They then continued the conversation on the "how many threads will mods lock/delete per day" thread where one said that they didn't see a difference in bashing on me than any other newbie. In that thread they also were asking a mod to bring mine back. and asked if anyone cached the thread. If the mods bring it back I'm going to be heated.

heres the other thread http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=674569
half of the first page and the second and third are pretty much about deleting mine. A guy even said that pictures are being pm'd as they speak. Not cool.

Dumb ass guys will be dumb ass guys. Nothing any of us can do about it. Don't let 'em get to you because at the end of the day you're still a subie driving badass woman and your car is cooler than thiers will ever be.

Maybe next time start asking them for shirtless pics or something. See how they like it. j/k :)

-1 for junk pics. Although a sexy 6-pack next to a scooby... yeah, that would be my background :D

I've been writing it off as (excuse the language, probably sensored) Penis evny without the proper equipment. If a guy is jealous of another guy, well... its kind of ok. But be jealous of a GIRL?!?!? BAD! So some feel the need to objectify us to make their macho egos feel better. My opinion anyway.

~DISCLAIMER~ I am in no way endorsing this behavior or attempting to justify it. I am just explaining why/how it happened. So please don't yell at me. Plus I'm slightly hungover.:p ~DISCLAIMER.

I've never posted on NASIOC, but i've found this to be true of any website. OT/GDD is generally where the dregs of the website gather.(i was once one. I never bashed the ladies, but i bashed the hell out of the newbs.) Look at the list of thread titles and you'll see what I mean. OT generally is allowed to behave the way they want because it's OT and not actually meant to help people. It's much more loosely regulated, which allows the d-bags free rain. And on a Male-dominated website like NASIOC/HONDA-TECH/WHATEVER, you can pretty much expect a bunch of E-badasses who sit behind their keyboards and bash anybody and everybody. The Internet gives everybody a feeling of invincibility cause no one knows who they are, so they can pretty much say anything. And because they can say anything, it generally comes out in the form of harrassment/bashing etc.

It's the new age e-construction site run by wanna-be badasses.

:( I'm sorry it happened to you, but it is pretty much par for the course for OT.

Even under the best of circumstances the while folks on NASIOC might be able to offer some helpful advice on Subarus, they are rather unlikely to offer much (if any) advise on relationships. I personally do read the Legacy forum on NASIOC for helpful information on my Subaru, and I skim read my local New England forum a fair amount (probably more than SubieGirls), I just wouldn't expect to run across a whole lot of helpful in-depth relationship advice on that particular BB. That being said, I am very sorry that you got treated the way you did.

EDIT: Light Bulb moment: It there any reason why Subiegirls can't add a general personal/relationship forum to this bulletin board ? I think most people here would bend over backwards to help you out.

I don't post in NASIOC OT often for that reason. Thankfully I have a bunch of friends that are there and I think they would back me if it were unwarranted harrasment. I post randomly in threads just to slide in my 2 cents here and there. I'd be afraid of posting my own thread for the same reason. You don't have to be a noob making a stupid mistake that "begs to be flammed." The second you're female (intelligent/classy or not) they can run with it. It's wierd really how they pick and choose their battles. But I'll tell you I won't take the time to try to figure it out.

Jonathan, or OT is pretty much for anything and the topic of her NASIOC post is encouraged there.

I don't think it is so much pick and choose/you're female we are going to flame, as pack mentality and who happens to be on at any given time. If you happen to log on and post when chill people are posting, then, unless you post something horribly stupid, you won't get flamed. But if you post at the wrong time and the wrong people start flamming, well its all down hill from there. Once the ball starts rolling, they tend to feed off eachother and chase out anybody that would be helpful.

Lets make a list of what went wrong:

1) The Internet
2) A girl
3) Cars
4) Site that is probably 98% male
5) Being anonymous
6) A GIRL!!!!

Sorry to say, but it is a recipe for disaster. If you aren't "in" with the mods on NASIOC you're pretty much boned once those idiots get going. Just don't dare do anything to the "in" crew though or the mods will point/ban you. It's all a load of shit, and while NASIOC still has a wealth of information, it is beginning to become not worth the hassle of dealing with the locals.

OT is supposed to be for random stuff. Which is why I posted there, I'm not gonna post something like that on general or the newbie section because I would've had a million people telling me it was the wrong forum. I didn't have a problem until the whole point of the thread was ignored and all it was about was finding pics of me and talking about how I looked and how they wanted pictures of my "tits" hence the phrase "tits or gtfo" How is that ok? 9 pages of not posting anything of what my thread was about. 9 pages of guys asking to see my boobs and saying they're jacking off. (pardon my language) I don't care if OT is full of guys, if you're a man you should have enough respect for women to not act like an a-hole. If i'm asking them to stop politely and the mods just posted the little popcorn eater how is that ok? They didn't even take the mods seriously. These guys go to car shows and drool over models and talk about how amazing they are, then when a normal girl has some average pics she's bashed about not being classy and treated like she doesn't have a right to have an opinion if she doesn't show her body more. If any other thread had gotten off the topic for 3 pages it probably would have been locked, but because it involved pictures of me it wasn't closed. Even after I asked the mods. This wasn't newbie bashing, no one mentioned "noob" once, it was only "tits" so no I don't think that is the same as newbie bashing. That is not what OT is supposed to be about. I don't care what anyone says.

I am coming from a basically male only sport- I am one of the only woman drivers in rally- period. I get a long fine and it is due in major part to the awesome community but I have a few pointers for those of you who are faint of heart with men and harassment.

1) make your screen name something that doesn't make it so obvious that your a woman. I made mine what it is for people I know to know me- but perhaps the horny dude to pass me by while searching for some prey.

2) if you don't want dumb men commenting on your threads- then change your pic. If it is the same one that you have on here... then you appear to me to be asking for it. I am not the kind of chic to blame the woman for being raped or something but, this is the internet and you look like a car model. And men by the way, don't respect car models as anything more than eye candy. You are putting yourself in this category with that picture.

3) Don't get personal. If you want to be respected as an active member of a male dominated forum then don't talk about bunnies and relationships... Talk about something that makes someone want to respect you...

Good luck girlie and keep being you!

Erika, I don't disagree with what you are saying but one thing we are trying to do here is BREAK the mold. Being non-gendered is pretty much being male in their world.

I have never been harrassed, stalked or anything with my girl screen name (which I use on every forum) and I will say, when I made the screen name I didn't even THINK to not use anything female related because of fear of being harassed.

I read a thread last week in OT and the girl was harrassed for "pics or gtfo" because her post was stupid. If a guy wrote what she wrote he too would have been flammed (probably noob or not, that's how dumb it was). I can't read the initial post but it doesn't sound like it deserved the negative attention it got.

Really the best piece of advice one can give about NASIOC is to not even post there. Search for info on there, but don't post. While I've met some great people from there, the site is in a pretty bad decline of everyone being an asshole to everyone. On top of it all you're a girl on an Internet forum about cars. If your SN screams "I'm a girl!" they're all going to put their fleshlights down and throw their cats off their desk because it's time to google the SN and every piece of info you have in your profile!

In a nutshell: NASIOC sucks.

As far as the "tits or gtfo" and comments like that, OT tries their hardest to be like 4chan, but fails miserably. They take old and tired catchphrases/memes from 4chan and post them nonstop like they're the comedy kings. For example: "tits or gtfo" is an old and tired catchphrase that has been around the internet for many many years because back in the day there really were no girls on the internet, there were only fat bearded hairy guys in basements surrounded by fishtanks and cats pretending to be girls. Anything OT says about you is basically them trying to one-up another person in the "look at how fucking edgy and cool i am" department.

Again, I'm not endorsing this behavior.

I understand what you are saying here, but the problem is, this isn't real life. Sure half the stuff they say, they would never say in person. But the internet is a totally different animal. On the internet you're invincible, because no one can really touch you. What are the mods going to do, lock your account. Then you set up another, so the mods have no say.

So they act like they are invincible. And then the pack mentality kicks in. Your responding to them asking them to stop just encouraged them because then they smelled blood. If you look at any threads were someone is getting flamed, the response from the flamee ALWAYS elicits a far more brutal attack. The best bet would have been after about the second page, just ignoring it. It would have gone away.

If this had been in any other section, sure it would have been locked. BUT OT IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT, AND YOU PROVIDED IT. It's not right and I'm sorry to say this, but if you can't take the flames...

And for everyone bashing NASIOC, this isn't confined to NASIOC. Look at GDD on Honda-Tech, look at the OT for ANY other car related/testosterone infested website and you will find the exact same thing happening.

Again, I don't agree with it. I'm just stating the why and how.

I must add that the level of civility on this website is awesome. The thread in OT titled "I need your help" would have been flammed brutally on any other website. So kudos for that.

I agree. I never thought about putting something else as my screen name because I never thought it would have mattered, no my picture is not the same on those sites and my profile is pretty much empty there. As it is here. What I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't have cared if they bashed me for being a newbie or posting something stupid. But bashing me for being a woman. Hell no. I don't care if it's always been like that or it's acceptable behavior for them, because for me it is not. If I wouldn't treat someone like that then I expect the same respect from them. I know it's just the internet, and I'm a strong girl, but hey who knows how many girls aren't as strong and take what they said to heart. For god sakes they were finding stuff about me I didn't even know about. Don't tell me you don't think that's creepy. What I guess I'm trying to say is that even if it's just on the internet, sexual harassment is illegal for a reason. When I posted this here I was just trying to make a point on even if it is accepted, it still in no way is ok. And personally I don't think it should be tolerated. Or passed off as "guys being guys"

Although I have posted on Norcalimports.com and I didn't get this response at all. All of the posts were saying "nice car" or "welcome to the forum" or some such.

I disagree.

You can be a woman, post on NASIOC as a woman and be treated with respect. You have no reason to have to hide anything about yourself.

Jamie Thomas (AKA http://www.subiegal.com) is a well respected member of NASIOC. While I personally think some of her postings suggest she is perhaps a bit ditzy, and maybe even a bit of a shill for her sponsors, I have never seen her not treated with respect on NASIOC.

Yes, I agree that OFF TOPIC is something of young man's internet playground and a very bad place to post serious personal advice questions. However by leaving that place largely open and unregulated it seems rather popular with people (mostly young men) who like to have fun and joke around a lot (even if is at someone elses expense).

Oh and "Sharkbait" who is a well known poster who makes no secret of her being a woman seems to be especially popular in that particular forum.

Sharkbait seems to be quite a big deal (popular) and no one would dare cross her. The same people who would defend her on the interwebs would most likely "boobs or GTFO" another girl who didn't deserve to be harassed. Not that it is wrong doing on Sharkbait's part at all, she is one who beat the odds. Good for her!

There is a difference between Sharkbait and SWC. The difference is that Sharkbait is married to a "big" OT person. Or a mod. Something stupid like that. So she basically gets a free pass. :p

wow thats really creepy, thats why i dont go on nasioc unless i need to sell or buy something, i stick to the local smaller forums, because if some one does something horrendous like that you can punch them on the face in stead of just getting frustrated online. Sorry you had to deal with stupid people!

I'm horrified that this happened to you on Nasioc. I've never had a problem on Nasioc, HOWEVER, I only joined because my husband was on the site. When I joined I didn't even have a subaru yet. Occasionally I post on there because Aaron gets pulled over for exhaust etc and I generally just get told that "the exhaust is illegal" deal with it. whatever no big deal. But you should not have to put up with that at all. I am really dissapointed that the mods took so long to do something about it.

That being said I dont' usually post on Nasioc. I end up posting more on NES than anything. I didn't realize the SubieGirls forums were up until today and now I have an even better place to look for advice, etc on car stuff without feeling intimidated because I don't know everything about cars.

In regards to your picture. You are a very attractive woman, and I'd gather your quite intelligent too. Unfortunately when men see pretty woman all the blood rushes to their nether regions and they stop thinking. It DOES NOT excuse what they did. They are dirt bags and that's the end of that.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that, but you have us now and you know the mods here wouldn't let that happen!!!

One other note. I am quite sure that one of the reasons I don't get asked for pics or gtfo is because i'm a rather "big" woman right now. I used to be really small and if I still was and they found out i'm sure it would be all over...then again i'm sure Aaron would go kick some butt too.

It still does not justify their actions. It was wrong and I think in addition to locking the thread and deleting it that the Mods and/or forum owner should have BANNED for at least a MONTH or MORE every single person that participated in any sort of harrassment or encouragement to the harrassers.

Hey gal-

My advice is: When it comes to NASIOC, stick to car talk & nothing else... If you're a hott chick and decide to have a pic of yourself on online forums, ya gotta learn to ignore the pigs :)

The members who behave immaturely only do so because they are hidden safely behind their computer screen and therefore feel like it's ok to say what they want without consequence. That's unfortunately just how it is for some people.

Betcha if any of those nerds saw you in person they wouldn't be quite so vocal :p

I'm sorry that happened to ya, but don't let it get to ya.... Stick to SubieGirls! :D

In regards to your picture. You are a very attractive woman, and I'd gather your quite intelligent too.My previous posts were made prior to seeing your photos. I agree with Impreza Rose. I have been wondering if I was a teenager and posting on that OFF TOPIC forum if I would have been in with the crowd and attempting to one up my fellow posters with such tactless and crude remarks. I don't know.

For the record I generally don't even read the OFF TOPIC forum, and usually only check out the New England and the Legacy forums.

Oh and "Sharkbait" who is a well known poster who makes no secret of her being a woman seems to be especially popular in that particular forum.

...and I heard there have been pics of her on the forum and on ban25. I haven't gotten bored or intrigued enough to check it out. I don't look down on her for it by any means. I can't say I've never posted a slightly revealing pic on another forum, but if I ever post anything of that nature on nabisco, it'll be with my car :p With how I've already been treated on there, I'm even debating that. You don't get willing posting of pics from a girl after you imply her pic was less than attractive. Assholes.

If any wants a lulz, read this writeup about NASIOC OT. It's pretty amusing.

I'm not a fan of nasioc.. Good place to look at parts for sale, and look at some nice subies. That's about it.. too big of a forum for me. Had a bad experience a few months ago.

Im a dude and that shit is annoying when n00bs do that. Kinda ignorant. I believe the same thing that the women should be treated as equals. I think its hot that a girl drives stick none the less drives a subaru :), but I also won't ehump and be immature like that. I can take nasioc in doses and mainly just sit in the for sale threads. Im sorry for the male species that has to be stupid like that.
