So Ed and I have been discussing what is going to happen w/ the spare STi and/or wrx motor he has stored away, And I thought of a GREAT idea... Ed can build me an STi!!!!

So we are currently looking for a:
96-05 impreza sedan
or
96-06 Legacy sedan
(do not need be 2.5's, wrx', or gt's....)

Clean body (no rust!!), parts car OK, mechanical problems OK, preffer 5 sp, but will deal with automatic, high miles OK.

Max buy $1,500

Please keep in mind that we are in central MA and preffer something within 50 miles, as towing long distance would be a b*tch...

Please let me know if you have or have seen something that matches this description! Thank You! :D

$1,500?!? I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just help you put things into perspective.

You will never find an 02-05 Impreza for that price unless someone is gifting it to you. Even if it had a blown engine.

MAYBE a 96. With a blown engine? But I would think it would have some rust.

Updated OP, should have included GC models as well, tx for noticing Sarah!

You'd actually be suprised at how cheap people will sell stuff when desperate. Just the other day we found a listing for an 03 Impreza base model for $1,300. Said had blown tranny, needed timing belt and control arm. Called the lady she had sold it the day before for $900!! she said she was desperate for cash... We have seen quite a few other listings around this price range, the only prob is they are too far to pay for towing....

But ya its very possible to find a salvaged repairable around this price as well, we are also going to be checking out the auctions... Im not trying to jump into anything quickly as this will take some time, but like they say patience is avirtue and the longer we wait and look the more likely we are to find a good catch! About finding an 02-03 around this price, that will definetly be hard, but I wanted to throw it out there just in case anyone see's one!!

Too bad Im not a big fan of the foresters because these are all over the place for really cheap!! But I want a sedan...

So wish us luck! Tx!

I recently bought a rust bucket 1997 Subaru Outback Limited wagon for $1,300. Its got a grocery list of "issues", but it runs and drives fine. I am sure you can pick up something decent (maybe with a blown motor ?) for ~ $ 1,000.00. I passed on a '99 Outback with a blown motor because I liked this one so much more... My understanding is that the 6 speed Sti tranny is the same (or nearly the same) length a the 4 speed auto (4EAT) transmission, so if you are doing an Sti Motor swap you could also do a 6 speed DCCD tranny swap as well.

Here's one for ya

$1,000.00 OBO

http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/cto/1562672954.html

Its a green Outback wagon, it doesn't say where, but I am assuming this is North/West of Boston based on the URL.

Says it might need a motor and brakes... and the rear hatch has a few minor dings

There was also a GC Impreza listed for $ 700.00, but there was some rust behind the rear fenders.

Ya I have seen many listings for chaep w/ blown motors and other minor issues, just way out of reach. Ed said he can easily do a trannys wap if we cant find a manual...

Opps ! On closer inspection of the photos in the ad, the car does have rust, and its a bit dinged up... and it is in Lowell. Oh, and its an automatic as well. The seller can't spell, either...

but its only ~ $1000.00

Ya its in really good condition for the yr it is. No dent or scratches just one very small rust spot behind the rear drivers side wheel, which is infamous if you live in New England, Im going to get that fixed soon before it gets worse...

But Im not planning on any performance mods since this is just going to be a temporary daily driver. Until next tax season :D. Id like to get it tinted and throw on some black wheels, or maybe the newer multi spoke outback goldies, if I can find a cheap set... I cant wait! O yaa and a Subiegirls decal!!

This style ?

I have been watching this set. First he wanted $400, now $350... I figure when he gets under $300 I'll pounce.

Actually The alloy snowflake wheels with "gold pockets" were only produced in 1999. Very rare.

This is the wheel number on the finishlinewheels site, although their picture is of the same silver wheel.
Wheel# A-68697U55, 1999 SUBARU LEGACY Wheels LEGACY Rims

Although at $162/each you might be better off going for a set of BBS wheels. :)

Edit: The link you posted is for the same exact wheel, just a different year.

LoL ya i really like the look of those wheels, I wouldnt pay that price for factory wheels though, Im hoping someone might be selling a used set for cheap sometime. If I could afford to get a new set I'd def get something much better.... But I prob wont seeing as this will hopefully just be my beater until next tax season.....

Hit up some junk yards too, sometimes you find frames of STi's for about 900$ that you can just slap a trans/motor in. It's sad because it only had rear damage or frontal which is fixable.

Tried that, found none, I think closest was in WA state... lol, I got an outback. Not planning on swapping in the wrx motor though, seems like to much work for a car I hope on replacing next January....
