View Full Version : POLL: WBM Fundraiser Idea

Sarah and I have been discussing what we want to do for a fundraiser and what we want to raise money for.
One of the ideas we discussed was doing an "arrest a fan" fundraiser. Basicially, I'd dress up like a cop (a sexy one at that!) and people would come by our tent and buy tickets for $5.00 per person to arrest their friends/family. We would announce over the PA system (if they'll allow us to) the name of the person I'd be arresting and they'd "be arrested" for 10 - 15 minutes. If they want to find out who arrested them, it's $3.00 and they can pay an additional $2.00 to have that person arrested. We also thought the best way to make this work would be to have three people arrested at a time.
What we're curious to know is: do you guys think there will be enough interest from the people going to make this work? Please answer in the above poll and give us any of your thoughts on the subject.
Also, this fundraiser would be for a currently undecided charity.
Thanks!!!

maybe i should clarify myself, by interest i mean people purchasing tickets. the only volunteer we really need is the person "arresting" people and the people who will all ready be sitting at the tent. which i've all ready said i'll volunteer to arrest people. thanks for the feedback!

Will the jail cell you keep the person you "arrested" also have a gogo dancer in it? 'cause there has to be some sort of incentive to arrest your friends you know. :p
I think the first hour or so this may call some good attention, but like rickmoranisfan said, there has to be some sort of incentive, or people are going to get bored with it quickly, thats why I voted no.... sorry....
Why not have us members do a poll on a few different fundraiser ideas that you ladies have in mind??

+1. Maybe add some little cheap prizes into the mix or something. There's gotta be something that happens to those who get arrested that makes it worth spending money on.
-Maybe even sexy models all dressed up who pose & take pictures with the prisoners. And the prisoners are the only ones who get to do it.
-Maybe some Subaru-related prizes & a stupid little game or something
-Maybe being arrested gets you entered into a raffle?
Just throwing some ideas out there. :)

This is the kind of feedback we need!! Thanks guys!!
I agree 100% about needing an incentive. A raffle would be a wicked good idea! Do you think there would be a company out there whod donate a gift cert for it? Its for a charity so were not taking profits from this.
Im sure there would be a vendor willing to do this. First you need to have an idea of what type of prize or gift cert you'd be giving out... Then maybe get a list of the vendors that are going to be at the event and see if any of them would be wiling to help..... If not then go around to local business talking to managers and stuff....

Maybe we could put together a "basket" with either a part or service from a vendor of sorts (I think there are a few on this website :wink wink: ) and also throw in a Subie Girls calendar as well as part of the basket.
Maybe all who are arrested get put into the raffle or maybe all who buy get put into the raffle. Or if you arrest someone you get your name in the raffle, if you are arrested and pay to find out who arrested you you get your name in the raffle...?
I'm afraid while it's fun to think about not many people would donate.

I don't think the person being arrested should get raffle tickets, I think the person paying to arrest someone should get the raffle tickets. That is a pretty good incentive because everyone likes raffle tickets, and what better way to get them than have something humiliating happen to your friend!
I don't know about most people, but for me arresting one of my friends something funny would have to happen to them. Not throwing pies at them because not everyone would enjoy getting their clothes dirty (i.e. the brodawgs), but you girls have to do something to the arrested people!
Maybe do something to encourage people's girlfriends to get involved? Like if a girl arrests her boyfriend he has to wear a sign around his neck, or wear a poofy pink hat. Something that is goofy but not insulting, but something someone's girlfriend would laugh at and know her boyfriend would go along with. :p

I realllllly like the hat idea! And the basket idea. Maybe we could contact subaruwrxparts.com (or whatever exeter subarus parts web site is) for a 25 dollar gift cert. They go to the meet but 25 is doable for a donation. Any other vendors we could contact?
So wait, what does having to wear a hat have to do w/ being arrested? Are they going to be held in a holding cell for a certain amount of time and then have to wear a hat all day too? And hows the person getting humiliated (arrested) going to feel when his buddy or girl who had him/her arrested gets a raffle ticket over them? I dunno bout this idea, just my opinion..... I'd be let down knowing that i had to go through all this and not get anything out of it.
I mean look at it this way... last yrs dunk tank was a hit. This yrs gotta beat that, and I dunno if this idea does.

Well, for starters, since there would only be a couple of hats it would just be while they're arrested. Secondly, the person who gets arrested can pay 5 dollars to arrest the person who arrested them and then be entered into the raffle. I think you're looking way too far into this when its meant to be simple and funny/fun. I think this has the potential to be just as good as the dunk tank but if you have some additional ideas we would really like for you to post them. Sarah and I discussed the dunk tank but decided that would be best as a last resort if we really can't come up with something.
Throw out some suggestions. I think she just put up this one idea to get the ball rolling.
You'd be correct, this is just to get the ball rolling.

I sent a PM to Jess about this before reading this comment so I'll post here too. I like the sexy cop idea. We're getting closer to making the "jail" idea work, but I feel like it's not "jumping" at me. I think the dunk tank was funny last year and I agree that if we can't at least beat it we need to at least be at the same caliber as last year's event. I'm still brain storming as well.

I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. In college I worked on the school radio station and we had what was called the "Valentine's Day Massacre." We painted the car pink one year with "mushy" sayings and the next year red with hearts and people payed to hit the car with a sledge hammer. Granted these weren't necessarily car people, but this COULD be an idea. Linder's in Worcester donated the car to us. All fluids were drained and all glass was removed.
We could make signs/fliers to post online that say "help us smash hunger (or whatever thing we choose to donate to). We could designate certain parts on the car to be "mystery bonus" and the person who breaks/knocks off that part to be the winner of a prize. We could make 2 baskets up, fill 'em with stuff and those could be "incentive" for smashing the car.
And maybe we can find a way to have a sexy cop in there anyway... HAHAHAHA.
What do you ladies think?!? Please remember, we would need RIDICULOUS permission from WA-WA for this so if we like this idea we need to contact the WBM committee ASAP so we can write up a proposal to give to the venue.

I think this also sounds like a possibility. Do you think there would be enough room where no one could get hurt? I think this idea falls into the same category as hitting the bell at carnivals... People love to test their strength.
As far as the arrest a fan, the idea did jump out at me and that's why I've been so excited about it. I think either one of these ideas has a lot of potential to bring in a lot of money though.
What do you guys think?
And I was thinking. People like to take pictures for memories at events. So, on top of the larger subiegirls fundraiser event, what about providing a life size faceless cut out of a rally driver or a life size rally subaru and charge people to take pics, and provide them w/ a 5x7? Let everyone feel like a rally driver for a minute. W/ the car we could have the window cut out and provide some sort of steering wheel attachment so that it looks like they are driving the car.... Catch is, someone would have to bring a photo printer to be able to give people their pics by the end of the event and I dont have one. I would be willing to pay for the cut out. I think that $5 a pic would bring in a good amount of proceeds for the chosen charity... What do you guys/gals think?

I think we should run these ideas by Bob to see what he thinks. I think the cardboard cutout is a fun idea. I just think we need to think of if this way. Do we envision the DSG or SubieMods or any of the vendor type guys putting their faces behind cardboard cutouts for money. Ehhhh, I don't think so. But can you see packing a couple bucks to take a whack at a car? Sounds more likely. I think that is what we need to consider. What will reach the widest amount of taste at a large gathering of guys and at the least "peak" their interest.
I get what your saying about the vendor people not being interested, but the focus should be on the attendees, no? There are going to be alot more attendees then vendors... I think people owuld do it just for kicks. And it doesnt necessarily have to be a rally related cut out, something funny may make people want to take a pic. Last yr was a decent turnout considering the weather, this year should be even bigger and better, I hope! But it is just an idea for now, we gota keep brainstorming like you said.....

$1 for 30 seconds of a smashing good time (or something like that). We provide implements of destruction and let people go to town. Make it an Evo, or better yet an old Ford Focus (because they took Block away from us).
Smashing cars is loads of fun.
As for permission from Wa-Wa, you'd probably need to designate an area away from all other vehicles and cordon it off. Which shouldn't be that big a deal.
Did I mention smashing cars is loads of fun?
You could make huge sums of money doing this I'd imagine. I remember some of the fraternities at my college used to find totalled cars from DUI accidents and have it be all about drunk driving and how much fun it can bring to others... wait, that might not have been the message they were trying to get across...
Either way, I'm not sure if I mentioned this already. Smashing cars is loads of fun.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood what I was saying. While most of the people who are attending this event like cars, they all have different personalities. There are vendors, serious rally drivers, street racers, fan bois, and more. My point is we need something that will appeal to as many of the kinds of people there as possible. And if we want donations from vendors, we want them to think that our fundraiser is 1) a good idea (preferably something they'd even take part in), 2) something people will be interested in and see that they are a "sponsor" and and well, I think that covers it. :)

Ya I think the smashing cars idea would DEF be a hit (;) heehee).
And I wouldn't want to offend any of the serious rally people that will be there, so it could always be something else that's funny... I was just thinking to have the cut out as an added gag idea to make some proceeds.... :), and let some people go home w/ a funny memory of the WBM 2010.

But let's not forget we will have the Subie Girls tent. The kids tent. And the fundraiser. We really can't spread ourselves too thin. What we COULD do is take this year's kids tent budget to make a cutout where we can take pictures of kids with their faces. We could do the Ken Block and Rob Drydek one hole could be Rob's race while he's sitting in the mini car. But then what if it rains again. what a wreck the cardboard would be.

The kids cut out would be a good idea but I was just thinking the same exact thing before I read your post, that if the weathers crappy this wouldn't work unless it was under a tent too. That would be sad to see it get ruined... So I guess we can count this out :(...

If you guys do the wrecked car, you would have to smash or remove the glass before the event. as much fun as smashing glass is, im sure wachusett would not be happy about glass all over the place, plus think safety. we dont want someone getting glass in their eye...
$1 for 30 seconds is not enough, you would need to charge more.
If anyone knows where to get cheap pedal cars, a pedal car racing event would be fun too.

As long as the car isn't a Subaru (instead a General Motors vehicle would be my personal preference), I would be up for this.

Moon bounce is fun but really there are not enough kids at the event to make it worth it. And again, pedal cars sound found for the kids tent but its easier to run the kids tent when it's contained in the tent.
And yes, all glass would be removed from the car to be smashed.

Hey Good Point Jonathan, but it's only for one measly day (i know it's one of the big days they expect to make money, but hey we need to also do the same) and I don't remember there food court having much of a dessert variety. I spoke with one of the WBM committee people last night. He's going to see if the car smashing will fly with them but the Mtn. is clearly in their busy season right now and it will be approx. a month before we are able to discuss it with them.
Ya about the baked goods, That should def be run by the wa-wa staff first like Jonathan stated, they sell food so thats how they make the bulk of thier money for this event. So they probably wont allow it. Last yr there were no foods/beverages being sold, only booths that were giving away free samples of drinks....
I dont see why they wouldn't allow smashing of the car for a charity purpouse, as long as we clean up any mess/debris that are left over... Lets hope they are up for it!! :D

Baked goods are fine if we're making them to munch on throughout the day for ourselves, but I don't think it's even worth asking Wa-wa about it. Like Mon said, they have their own food and really, it would probably cost more to make to food than the return we'd get on it.

Also, I have an idea for a cause to raise money for:
There's a little boy in my local area who is fighting leukemia. This is the second time he's had to fight it. I know he's not local for most of you, but he's been spending all of his time at the Children's Hospital with his mom who can't work because she's with him. This little boy is the nephew of my old cheering coach and is the son of a friend of a girl I work with. They've been doing bone marrow drives also but the family still has to struggle with medical debt, especially with only one parent able to work. They also have another son who needs to be taken care of as well.
Here's a link to the article in our local newspaper. http://www.seacoastonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100207/NEWS/2070326
I thought there was information about where to send any fundraising money in this article but it isn't here. I can get that info and post it once I have it if this is something we'd be interested in donating to. Once again, I know this isn't a national charity and I know it's not local to most of you, but this little 5 year old boy and his family need help and I think SubieGirls.com could be of a great help to them.

I'm waiting to hear from Wachusett on the car smash.
And about the car smash thing, How long do you think one car will last? I mean you can only smash a car so much until it cant take anymore damage, This event is from 9-4pm right? Might need 2 cars to keep everyone entertained and interested.....
About Jess's idea.... why not hold the charity for the Dana-Farber Cancer institute, who funds the cancer programs, and works on finding cures. They are affiliated w/ Boston Childrens Hospital and others who specialize in treatment for people suffuring from cancer including leukeimia.
I understand that this family is suffering but there are hundreds of thousands of families struggling with this disease and I dont think its fair to just help out one... instead helping raise money on finding a cure would benifit all of these families and other to come in the future.....

^In college we always had one car. And we don't have to do it from 9-4, we could do it from 10-3 or 10-2.
I think that doing a wider charity would be better for this event. Also, I was hoping to choose something other than "cancer" or an illness b/c we do Scoobies for Boobies.
I'm going to message Bob to remind him about talking to the venue about it. I know he didn't forget but I want to stress that we're trying to be organized.

Ya I was thinking the same thing regarding raising money for cancer since we already do it for ACS. And last yr was for ASPCA right? or was that OCC Show? So what else is there? We only have about 3 months left! Maybe Public Schools? Buying supplies or how about the school here in worcester that ws vandalized 2 months ago or so and they destroyed every computer they had and ruined the building... At my son's daycare they have been taking donations for this school for supplies such as notebooks pencils etc... But the school system doesnt have the funds to buy them computers... If we did that Im sure we could have an article printed in the T&G.... Get the subiegirl name out there.....
Heres some info on it if interested....

I was thinking something regarding meals for wheels or hunger or something like that? ASPCA was done last summer and we helped with that.
I didn't know about that school thing. That's crazy.
Ya it was sad, those kids dont have any computers now...
Meals on Wheels would be a really good cause. Alot of these poor elderly people have no family, low income, no means of providing themselves food, etc. I really like this idea....
And I was thinking about writing a letter to the Telegram and Gazette (local newspaper) Editor to see if they'd be interested in coming to the WBM and doing an article about it... What do you guys think?

Just throwing this out there, maybe for our next fundraiser, but since SOA is about Going Green and being enviornmentally friendly, why dont we raise money for an enviornmental cause and maybe gain some recognition from SOA for raising money for the same type of cause they designed their plants under?
Subaru Enviornmental Policies (http://www.subaru.com/company/environmental-policy.html)
And wouldn't it be an advantage for the subiegirls name to stick to raising money for one cause for a while, to gain aknowledgement and good rapport w/ one chosen charity?

Ok, I would love to hit the East Coast for this, but I highly doubt that will be in the funds this year. Mayeb I can save up for next year, that would be cool, I may actually have a nice Subie by then! haha
Anyways, I like the idea of sticking to the same thing for awhile, maybe change every 3-5 years, moving between a handful of charities. I like the idea for the school, meals on wheel, and as always Autism. Maybe this year raise money for the school, then move back to the one you did last year, then pick 2 or 3 more to move between every few years. Build a nice rapport with a few charities, so they know every 4 years of whatever they will get your help for 2 year. Make sense?
As for the fundraisers, I love the smashing the car idea, I would so get in on that! I always kicked my Honda when I got mad! Now I have a car I love so I can't hurt it! haha And could anyone make a cut out from a piece of plywood? You could to that for the kids booth and then keep it for next year and the year after, making changes to the paint job on the car for each year. I like that idea for the kids.

Aslo, your going to want time to clean your mess with the car, if you are able to do it, so keeping the smash time before 4 would be good.

so why don't we just keep doing scoobies for boobies since that really is our biggest charity?

Not a bad idea, can we get sum feedback from the Boss Lady on what she thinks ;)

We could keep with Scoobies for Boobies. I'm not opposed to it, but I would like to do about 3 things a year that we organize.
Clearly, Scoobies for Boobies is HUGE and our most organized one. I think toys for tots in the winter is fun/easy. And I'm not opposed to going with something environmental instead of Meals for Wheels that was fun b/c car related. If we wanted to choose a different environmental org each WBM that would keep it a bit more simple?
P.S. I may start text messaging Rob every day about the fundraiser.

I like the idea of sticking with the 3 causes! How about an enviornemental charity for subaru only events? We'd have to do some research to find a good enviornmental charity.
And ummm yaa blow his sh*t up!! lol

how the enviromental thing but also display the 3 "R's"
Recycle. like a bin full of bottles and cans
Reduce. Come up with clever ideas on reducing consumption on every day products. (one i've read about recently is about how people use way tooo much laundry detergent then they really need to use to get the job done)
Reuse. come up with some neat arts and crafts made from every day items we take for granted and throw out.
this could inspire people to think more green! :D
I found this site by the American Institute of Philanthropy that rates top charities:
Groups included on the Top-Rated list generally spend 75% or more of their budgets on programs, spend $25 or less to raise $100 in public support, do not hold excessive assets in reserve, and receive "open-book" status for disclosure of basic financial information and documents to AIP
Top Rated Charities by the American Institute of Philanthropy (http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html#enviro)
Look under Enviornment
I'm still researching but the Enviornmental Defense Fund has def caught my eye.... I like that they focus on more than one enviornmental issue. They focus on Global Warming, Land, water & wildlife, oceans and health....
Info on EDF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_Defense_Fund)
I reasearched ACS and sadly they only got a rating of a C+....
So the marketing team at the Enviornmental Defense Fund is sending me some liturature about who they are and what they've done to hand out at the WBM. She said she'd be sending it out this weekend, so Im going to be tracking the package soon.
Then I was thinking that we should have some sort of poster board next to the Car Smash with some info:
Subiegirls Present WBM's Car Smash (or something of the sort)
Prices to Smash the car
Where the Proceeds are going (EDF)
Who sponsored/donated the car
Ill cover the cost. I was thinking a 24"x36" sign would be sufficient. Does anyone know any cheap printing places, or have any discounts to printing co's? If not then Ill just go to Staples.
Buuuuuut, I have no graphic design skills at all, so I'd need someone to volunteer some time to create the poster.
What do you gals/guys think? And please let me know if you would be willing to help create the poster. This needs to be done within the next week :)

Cool, glad they are sending us some info.
PSH - You think I'm already not making posters for this?!? :p
But if you are able to help me in the purchase that is MUCH appreciated. We are still wrangling up some sponsors so printing will be a bit more to go to a place like FedEx. We'll figure it out.
