Ok i wasnt sure if it could be done on a wrx without pretty much making it an sti. I think thats what the guy wasnt getting, oh and he couldnt read that i was saying 289 not 280. And im taking a beginners mechanics class right now so i think what im going to do is get all the certificates and then find a subaru program because merced only offers a toyota/lexus program. Doesnt it look better when you apply for a job if youve already gone through the program? And yeah idk i just took the beginners class just to get a little familiarized and its by far my favorite class ive ever taken. Its interesting and to me a lot of the stuff just makes sense.

Yeah thats usually what they do but some schools offer those classes, so the dealership doesnt have to send you to take them. Thats what merceds toyo/lexus program is. So it gives you that extra oomph for them to hire you because they dont have to send you to take the classes.

No what i questioned was 400hp on a wrx because he said his buddy had one, theeeen he told me he put a 6sp tranny in it which makes a huge difference right? he made it seem like my car should have over 300. Personally i think 300 is safe on a wrx with the stock tranny.

Meh, not all honda dudes are morons.. just that one was lacking knowledge and had a hard on because superwoman knows a thing or two about cars. The WRX tranny can handle about 400hp, the aggressive clutch you have to get for the higher hp/whp eats them up. Which you can get RA gears or PPG gears to bomb proof the internals but the extra gear on the six is just worth it. Doesn't take much to swap them out either :)

As far as becoming a mechanic and about the certification side it's going to be very hard for you. I don't mean this to be rude but for some reason in my experience I've seen ladies get all kinds of crap for it. I work at a mechanic shop on the weekends and the guys there are pretty hard up. We actually had a girl working there and she took all kinds of shit. She was very good looking and I tried to stand up for her a couple of times but the guys there wouldn't let it go that she had a passion for cars. Sadly I work another job during the week and she was full time. She had auto mechanic degree and everything but she quit because the guy were dicks and couldn't take the abuse. I don't work there now, even though I did get a long with some guys it just wasn't my deal (subaru dealer btw). I say if you can find a shop just start working and get experience and see if you like working in that enviroment. We did this all the time, just have people come in and shadow a tech for a few months. Use to have college interns come in and take things apart and they always had question on how to get it back together. Once you start mastering certain things you'll see there isn't much difference from one car to the next. :)

WOW, im not feeling any love here, lol. i am a honda guy, for some of you that might be a let down, but i am not ignorant about it. i know that having 376whp on a honda will go fast in a straight line but if i went on a road course vs a stock sti i would get my ass handed to me. even in a drag race the sti would get me off the line because i have this thing called "wheel hop" and the sti would just GO, i might make a comeback in the end but the main thing is i know what im getting into. i am trying to get rid of all my honda stuff so that i may aquire a wrx but so far its just not working out. i do give you props for dealing with him for that long though because when ppl want to talk to me about my car and they start pulling stuff out of their ass i just walk away.and the fact that you said you have 289 hp i guess he didnt catch on to the fact that you ment Whp not crank. it is people like that, that make all honda fans, including myself, look like assholes.

Being a tech for Subaru, or for any make/model sucks!! IMO, I would look into something else. It is very physical work & hard on your hands, arms, legs, back! You may start out hourly, but you will be flat rate at some point which means that you never know how many hours you will make. I watch my husband beat his body up everyday trying to turn hours for the majic dollar. It breaks down like this, if he is at work today from 6:30-5:00 and he works on 2 cars all day - lets say the 1st one is front brakes & an oil change 2.30 hrs, and the other is an allignment .50, and that's it - he makes 2.8 total hours for the day instead of the 10.5 he was actually there. This also works the other way too, he is very good at flat rate and good at what he does so I have seen him make as much as 27 hours in that same day. You have to remember though, that he has a lot of experience and has been a tech for years.
If you really want to be a tech, that's cool and you should go for it - just don't expect to make bank on it because it's hard physical work. Do you think that if you had to do a tranny swap, motor swap, or a rear sub frame brace that you could pull the motor, tranny or lift a body off of its frame by yourself - without killing yourself or anyone else? If your demanding equal rights, you can't expect them to give all the tough, hard, heavy jobs to the guys and give you all the gravy. In short if you ask him or any other tech if they like being a mechanic for a LIVING 9 times out of 10 they will say it sucks! Spinning wrenches on your own car may be fun but it's a crappy way to make a living. Add in the cost of a big box & all of the regular and special tools it requires = it isn't worth it! I'm not hating on you, and I don't really care one way or the other what you do with your life - I'm just offering you some honest advice about what it is really like to spin wrenches for a living - take it for what it's worth.

Just some more advice off of Christine's, one of the service writers I know told me that they hired a new female writer that switched over from being a tech. She was a tech and was tired of being broken/hurt. She could physically do and liked the work, but she was actually breaking bones and badly hurting herself. So, she decided to make the switch.

at 280whp it is safe to say that you have more wheel horsepower than an STi... my 06 STi, dyno'd in at 257whp when stock and thats on a VF39... damn you mustang dyno for being such a heartbreaker LOL

I like working on cars at times, but there are many times where it just kills me to get up in the morning on a weekend or something and have to go out and fix something that needs to be fixed in order to drive my car. That's when I have an even greater respect for techs. Not to mention when it's really cold, rainy/snowy out, dark, and you have to work work on cars with a cold, in addition have your hands all banged up. I could go on and on but ya get the idea.

I was a PC tech for a few years because I was good at it, but I still have some scars on my fingers and hands from doing stupid sh*t just to save some time (a whole 5 seconds.) Now I cringe whenever I have to install memory or upgrade something. I'm even having this guy I know build one for me that's really cool. I told him as long as I don't have to actually touch the inside of the case I'm fine.

^^^^Christine is right! My BF's a tech and he would never say that he likes it! His hands are always sooo banged up with cuts and scrapes... :( Not to mention, his back is never right, and his legs always ache from the cold...

Ok, here's my $0.02. IMO, there's a couple different things going on. First off, I'll agree that in my experience Honda drivers are notoriously ignorant and outspoken...a deadly (and annoying) combination. However, beyond that, I think this guy was a little intimidated. Hiding behind our tough, machismo laden outer shell, we gentlemen all have tiny little, fragile egos....and that goes for all makes and models, not just hondas. I mean, not to defend him, because he obviously was an @ss, but from his perspective here is this attractive woman who drives a car that without hesitation would spank his beloved Vtec in any automotive competition. Now shovel on top that, not only does she know what she is talking about, but she going to school to learn more. That's pretty intimidating, and some guys just can't deal with that and look for any opportunity to prove their superiority (or your inferiority) in this "male dominated" culture. Fortunately, you were able to put him in his place, but unfortunately there are alot more guys out there like him.

On a related note....I am pretty new to these forums (I'm usually over at IWSTI and NASIOC) but I have been reading around these forums for a couple weeks now and am very impressed with 1) the "community" atmosphere you ladies have and 2) the vast amount of knowledge and expertise that is found in the community (I'll be honest there are ALOT of ladies on here that most assuredly know way more about my STI than I do!) Talk about a shot to my fragile male ego! :)

So, that all being said, SWC...go get your mechanic's certs so I can finally have a knowledgeable Subaru Tech to trust my baby to!

Being a tech for Subaru, or for any make/model sucks!! IMO, I would look into something else. It is very physical work & hard on your hands, arms, legs, back! While I certainly agree with Christine here, I think working for an established dealer is an excellent way to learn... after a short time you could establish your own shop (hopefully with a few other techs). Dealerships around here are a total rip-off... An honest shop where people know what they are doing and charge *reasonable* rates for the work they do can't help but succeed, although few manufacturers are willing to release their "trade secrets" to an independent shop... so having enough inside information to know what needs to be done will give you an edge.
