Margo and I are ummm... Ferrari lovers. I was talking with someone the other day about them (sorry I forgot who) and their standing in F1 this year. I haven't been up on the races but I do know they aren't doing hott and they aren't happy about it. Said mystery person said they may be dropping out next year.

Margo, I don't think you watch F1 but either way, I'd like to know how you're feeling about this (other than crushed?!? j/k) and this is open for anyone who cares. (Pete and Paddy should have strong opinions on this, let's see if they're active members ;) )

Again, I haven't had time to watch TV at all let alone F1, but I did catch the qualifiers for the first race of the season with Pete and it was super exciting with all the new F1 rules. As much as I love Ferrari, I think that it's great that there is some actual competition in the races this year with other companies. If Ferrari drops out, they are a bunch of cry babies. Unless they're taking one year off to make a new badass car that will bring them back up when they join again.

Okay, that's all I got.

I read somewhere on the interwebs that F1 as a whole was getting fazed out. but I don't know, not everything that you read on the interwebs is true.

I myself am also a huge Ferrari fan....loved Schumi. This season has been quite disappointing and the BIG 3 aren't doing so well. They have been making some serious bad decisions during qualifying. Although to make things interesting Brawn and Red Bull are rocking it. The big teams are saying that they are going to split from F1....we shall see what happens.......

I'm a little disappointed Ferrari isn't doing well, but I'm happy to see everything getting mixed up this year. It got a little boring last year with just Mclaren/Mercedes and Ferrari duking it out. BMW had a few top finishes, but they weren't in the fight. The season ending race was absolutely nuts and really capped the season off well. The new rules this year as well as the new team (Brawn) has shown how much is car and how much is driver.

We'll have to have an F1 meet. I've been missing too many races. Paddy has been Tivo'ing them, but I haven't had time to get over to his place to watch them. I could have watched the last two live, but again, there were more important things going on at the same time so I missed them. Qualifying is nearly as exciting as the race, so I hate to miss that too.

I absolutely love qualifying. It is so much more exciting now they went to the new rules.

I missed Monaco and Turkey. poo.

F1 meet - please!!! :D I wish I got speed. Usually I end up at Chris' house if I want to watch it, and if its on Fox TV then I get to watch it at home.

lolol.

Well, I don't know if I am excited for it. My happiness and excitement is tempered by BMW Sauber pulling out of F1 and my driver Robert Kubica being a "free agent" now.

Jonathan
08-16-2009, 11:25 PM
Yeah - My team for F1 is BMW Sauber (Go Robert Kubica!!! Polacks FTW).

Like so many other teams BMW is pulling out of F1 and Peter Sauber just doesn't have the resources to purchase the remains of his former team. BMW claims to be investing heavily in this years car (attempting to salvage a dismal season) but after 2009 they will no longer compete in F1. This means Robert will likely be out of a job, and Nick will have to concider retirement.

The way things are going, I don't see Toyota, Force-India, or Williams lasting in F1 for much longer.

At least when Honda pulled out (when they were finally on the brink of success) they let Ross run their chassis (with an Ilmore-"Mercedes" engine).

Between Bernie and Max this series has essentially been converted to a "spec" series... much like NASCAR except far more money gets spent and the racing (while it is still *real* racing) isn't as exciting.

Since the kinky retard (Max) is finally promised to step down and the former Ferrari team manager Jean Todt will be replacing him, things may not be as bad as they seem. Jean has denied that he will be favouring Ferrari (unlike Max who clearly has been doing this for several years) and claims that he will remain totally neutral towards all the remaining F1 teams.

I am not sure what to expect next year.

Well, looks like Ferrari is going to pay out Kimi's contract too to make room for Alonso.

What a season!

Jonathan
11-02-2009, 01:43 AM
It isn't clear yet if Kimi will return to McLaren or perhaps more likely sign on with Toyota.

This season has certainly been full of surprises.

Jonathan
11-07-2009, 10:37 PM
Well Since Toyota has finally thrown in the towel and given up on Formula One, it looks like Kimi's choices are limited to taking a pay cut with McLaren, taking a bigger pay cut with a second tier, or a new "start-up" team, or retirement.

Wait, but I thought Kimi was gonna do rally? I wanna know where Kubica lands.
Robert is going to Renault. He tried to do the Monte Carlo Rally but his Renault was a non starter.

Kimi will be doing a full season of Rally driving with Red Bull sponsourship, but for a lessor formula than WRC so he can gain some experiance.

I guess the really big news is Mercedes buying the Brawn (formerly Honda) team and replacing Jenson Button (who is going to McLaren) and Rubens with a couple of Germans: Micheal Schumacher (who is coming out of retirement after 3 years), and Nico Roseburg (who did so well with the Williams). While it isn't clear just how strong the team will be, it is hard to count them out given the caliber of the people involved.

Toyota has also found things in F1 a bit too tough and has withdrawn.
Jarno Trulli did a test for Michael Waltrip's NASCAR stock car team, although it isn't clear how well he did.

Oh... and I forgot all about "Flabio" (Flavio Briatore) and Pat Symonds of Renault getting booted out of Formula One. Pat received a 5 year ban, and "Flabio" got a lifetime ban (later reversed by a French court) from the FIA for their parts in the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix where Fernando Alonso won after teammate Nelson spun out on course at the optimum moment to bring out the safety car whilst Fernando made an important pit stop. As soon as these weasels replaced Nelsono Piquet jr, Nelsono ratted them out. It seems he was told to crash his car on command to give Fernando the edge... as soon as the safety car came out nobody was allowed to in to the pits, and Fernando was easily able to catch up with the field.

Personally I think Flavio Bratore is a disgusting dirt bag and has no business in F1, and I am glad to see him gone. The means, however, that Renault F1 will have both a new team manager and a new chief designer for 2010, putting Robert Kubica in a potentially awkward situation if the new car isn't significantly better than last years car.

Good News for Robert Kubica fans: The rumours are that he has signed an "option" for a 2011 Ferrari spot (likely replacing Philipe Massa).

Jonathan

Very bad news for Robert Kubica fans:

Robert suffered multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand in a crash on the Ronde di Andora Italian rally on Sunday (today). Given that F1 starts in Bahrain in about a month, it is rather unlikely that he will be able to compete in the early F1 races. Its way too early to tell, but I would be most concerned about the injuries to his right hand.

It looks like Bruno Senna (as the reserve Renault driver) will get his big break, an opportunity to finally drive a competitive F1 car, although so far I haven't seen much of anything from him. I don't expect much.

So my goal is to watch all races this season and to go to F1 in Canada. I had some people bail and I'm waiting on two others that will probably bail as well. So I may have to just save up for killer seats next year.

Jonathan

Bernie has been attempting to kill the Canadian Grand Prix for years.

He is more interested in creating new venues in Russia, and India, as he has already done in China, Malaysia and Bahrain. In order to add more venues, he must remove some of the existing ones as the F1 circus can not manage more than ~ 17 Grand Prix in one season.

If you are serious about wanting to see the Canadian Grand Prix you should do it before they remove this one from the calendar.

Good to know! I heard rumors of one in the states. Texas I think?

Yes, I have also heard such rumors. Unfortunately most of the new tracks, while very safe, lack the excitement of some of the vintage older tracks.

Most of the "new" tracks are fairly "flat" and largely featureless... a series of short straights linked with some very tight hairpin corners... While such tracks are technically challenging they tend to be rather boring, especially when compared to Spa, Monza or even Watkins Glen in New York.

Well what with the Bahrain military shooting and killing so many innocent protesters, my guess is that this banana republic is no longer suitable for a Grand Prix. Hopefully Bernie, FOA and FIA see things the same way and cancel this one particular race.

I advocate boycotting this miserable country.
