Ok so I'm trying to figure out what exhaust system to upgrade to...was wondering what everyone had and suggestions!!
I have the Turbo XS muffler now and Turbo XS RFL-BOV...kind of want to stay same throughout so no issues, but looking for advice! Thanks!

Ok so you wanna hear some crappy crap??? I am definitely getting new exhaust faster than thought because of my crappy day today! Woke up no problems, was taking my kiddo to school and I pull out to intersection right by his school (I mean could see front doors across street) and two things at once happened as if on cue! I hear this bang and feel scraping on the ground and KNEW RIGHT AWAY! I JUST FELT MUFFLER BREAK!! and at the same exact moment I hear MOMMY!!!! so I look back and see my kid holding puke in his hands!!! talk about a great freaking start to the day!!! I pull over to get kiddo cleaned, and then look at ass end of car!! Low and behold....muffler hanging by a thread!!!! So I pull it the rest of way off and throw dang thing in trunk....have to turn around and go clean up kid then back track without a muffler and get kid late!!! Plus later in the day today, we lost an air freshener can behind washer and husband has great idea to hang our kid upside down for him to grab can (after he moved washer away from wall) well that was working until I hear a crack!! He was sitting on the edge of our bathroom sink and it busted!! I mean come on!!! What else can go wrong today??? not to mention few others things today going on that was either canceled or had issues with!! its just been a freaking day!! so now i REALLY need to figure out what system I'm going with since I need to get it done now!

I FINALLY got my exhaust installed. It took me two days and some dumb ass mistakes, but i got it done.
SRS CBE and a catless ERZ DP. The entire setup cost me >$300. I'll be doing a full writeup soon, but it was worth it. If I hadn't been a moron and made stupid mistakes it would have been faster. It's a pretty decent exhaust.
Quick question... i didn't reinstall the old turbo heat shield. Is there any danger to running without it? I have been monitoring my intake temps and it hasn't changed much.
StripesRX
03-18-2010, 08:59 AM
Theres no real danger, but you will suffer from some heatsoak. IE the TMIC will get rather hot from being so close to the hot turbo. Loose a little power on hot days sitting in traffic. Nothing more than that.
Have fun with those studs on the back of the turbo, did you? :D

Ok cool, i guess nothing that a little water spray won't fix..
Actually no, the DP went on really easy. A little PB Blaster and the bolts came right off. I was really shocked. The only bolts i had trouble with were the catback to cat spring bolts. I broke both of them. Drove around getting new bolts, only to find out when i replaced the DP, that i didn't need them.
The hardest part was putting the freaking intercooler back on. It took me and friend over an hour to figure out, unbolt both pipes, put them on, then bolt intercooler back on. In our defense, it was 11:30 and we were both really tired.

:( I know how you feel. It took forever before i could start on my car. Luckily this exhaust cost me around $330. From what I could find about the exhaust, it is decent exhaust.
Now i have to save up for my suspension mods, hopefully a larger front sway bar.

yeah sadly the heat shield is useless, it doesn't deflect the heat worth crap and basically heats up causing the heat to flood the bay. Best bet is to take thermal tape and wrap it up. Then put a turbo blanket on... after pushing the car hard at the track you can literally put you hand on the blanket and it's warm but not hot at all :)

Recently installed a Borla Hush Cat Back.... Its not very hushed though... lol we were expecting it to be much quieter than the magnaflow we had on it, but its prob only a slight bit quieter... it does give it a more grown up sophisticated rumble I guess you could say. Its supposed to be very good performance wise, but we wont be able to test that until we get the clunking suspension issues out of the way and take it to the drag strip....

I'm rocking an HKS catless 3 inch downpipe and an Ansa "Silverline" exhaust. It's loud but sounds real good. I get looks everytime I lay into it. it gets old on 14 hr trips home from rally races (wagon drone FTL) I think with a resonator it could be the perfect subie exhaust.
here's an in car of some snowplay where you can hear it. You can also look around there and see if there are any better examples.

i know dyno videos are horrible to show an example of sound.. lots of background noise & stuff but about 39 seconds in you can kinda hear it "okay"
i dont know really what a hush or nur spec sounds like in person so i cant really compare.
on a scale of 1-10 & 10 being the loudest i'd give it like a 7 or an 8

I had the ERZ on my WRX before I took it to ESP and replaced the ERZ with an Invidia.
I never thought it was that loud, but my codriver couldn't stand it. In fact, he bought a "silencer" to put in the tailpipe when he drove it from Maryland to Kansas for the SCCA Solo Nationals.
I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

I have a 3" Helix catless DP continuing into a 3" Blitz Nur-Spec. I'm fully catless.
It's very loud, but it sounds amazing. Obviously I'm slightly biased but it is my absolute favorite exhaust.
The only time it ever becomes too much is on drives longer than about 3 hours at a consistent speed.
I have a silencer for it when I go on long trips and I also put sound deadening matting in my trunk area which helped a little bit. It's worse for people in the back seat, lol.

I'm running a 3" Cobb turboback with a resonator in the midpipe due to the fact that it was quite loud when you got on it. Unfortunately I am still running a stock up pipe. It still has a great sound to it.
I have the matching catless up pipe ready for install but haven't found the time to put that in. I will do that soon and also do my pink Samco turbo inlet at the same time.

I have a Greddy EVO 2 Dual exhaust, an Unknown Brand of Catless Downpipe (however the dealer had to weld in a High Flow Cat so he didn't get fined for selling me a catless car) and a Cast Catless Cobb Up Pipe.
Sometimes I think the sound of my car is better than sex. SOMETIMES

Does anyone have the Perrin Stealth Catback? I'm looking at getting one for my car within the next month. did you have to get a tune? I'm going for the catback and the intake at the same time. I *heard* if you don't get a tune with the intake your car will run lean. True or false?

^ it's more of a problem if you have a catless downpipe with an 04+ WRX/STi....and even moreso with the 06+ because the stock tune from Subaru is lean as it is for emissions purposes. Boost spike is very possible/likely which can lead to engine failure due to lean condition. Although a tune for an intake helps for driveablilty and power, it's not as necessary as a tune for a catless downpipe.
BTW, I'm running a HKS HI Power CBE and LOVE the deep rumble. My tuner was recommending EL header for more TRQ and Power but would sacrifice my rumble. Stopped him right then and there. I wasn't losing my rumble.

catbacks do not need to be tuned for

some intakes require tuning, some dont. its usually the ones that have different pipe diameter than stock that cause things to get all out of whack.

I had the SPT Intake on the car well before my initial tune, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

I have a TSUDO sp2 exhaust on my 08 wrx. It was very inexpensive for the turbo back with the catless divorced wastegate@ 800 bucks. The only problem that I encountered with this exhaust was an unexpected rattle.
I was forced to remove the heatshield on the bottom of the car and exhaust wrap the portion where it was removed...... and magic, the rattle was fixed.
At first, I was very unhappy, due to the rattle... but now that I fixed the rattle, I couldn't be happier. The extra hp, the perrin stage 2 map, and the great sound is enough satisfaction for me :) For those who don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a turboback (ie: my bf with his perrin TBE) this is great for the money. but I will admit, it was not bolt on satisfactory.

Heeey I have a Cobb up and downpipe, Greddy ll evo exhaust..
Question for you though..did you tune it after you installed the downpipe because I am getting misfires and someone said it could be because I haven't had it tuned yet...thanks! :)
And I want headerrrs! Not doing many more more while my car is still reliable and mostly stock :/

You should get the car tuned after a DP install. As for the misfires, it's possible. Just stay out of boost if you can until you get it tuned.
Also, don't let the tuner do a baseline run. Why? It's not needed and should have been done when the car was fully stock and w/o any problems. Otherwise he/she would run the car hard with the DP but before the tune and that would be bad.
If you want a header, then look to buying a very high quality piece and spending some $,$$$ for it. Otherwise, consider a GrimmSpeed PnP on the header collectors, a GS crosspipe and a GS uppipe. Yes, even with the stock catless uppipe, you would benefit with an aftermarket piece.

Thank you! I'll get it tuned as soon as I can. I drive like a grandma most the time anyways so I'll stay out of boost as much as possible. Appreciate the advise!

^ do you get crap for your exhaust in VA?? My in-laws live in Woodbridge and my father in law bought an 11 wrx. He said they suck about mods around there & I guess its a PIA to get inspected so he went with the SPT.

My car has passed inspection and I've never gotten crap about my exhaust. Corey has a Perrin exhaust and he's never gotten crap for it either.
So, Idk maybe because I'm in VB? Different cities may be different?

Joslin, have you had any other exhausts before your invidia?

No, it was on the car when i bought it so I've been spoiled hehe. I do still love perrin exhausts too tho since I've been around coreys rex longer than my own :)

Ohh and I have a noob question I suppose haha. I'm not too familiar with the Stages, and I have been trying to read up on them. So, if my car has a short ram intake, DP, and catback exhaust, does that make me stage II? O.o I know my car has been tuned before by previous owner who did all the mods, but don't know what kind or anything haha

Stages vary depending on manufacturer but typically:
Stage 1 - ecu reflash
Stage 2 - downpipe and ecu reflash
Stage 3 - turbo upgrade and ecu reflash
Joslin Rae

Ok so corey and i are both stage II :D yay!
