Here's my story:
I've always dreamed of being a print model (like for ads, catalogs, and internet stores) since I'm not lanky enough to work the catwalk (I'm only 5'5"). I've been in school for fashion design for a couple of years now, and we get models in class for sketching and for fitting garments. I hear they get paid well and it looks like fun. Someday I'd like to have a job that I enjoy more, and this seems like a possiblity. I have more of an "alternative" look, with a couple piercings (no tattoos yet) and I had a mohawk for the last two summers that I'm thinking of bringing back soon.
Are any of you experienced in modeling? I've looked into some stuff online and even joined a website in the past, but I'm trying to get some info from "REAL" girls' experiences so I can get an idea of how to get started, whether agencies can really get me work, and what to expect overall.

Thanks for not asking for pics, sleepy
I figured I'd have more luck with this forum than the OT of some other forum *cough* that would only ask for pics and not really help.

All I know of modeling is that I was always told "You have the look we want, but you are too short", ever for print ads! Rude! Being 5'1" sucks! haha Also never sign with any agency that wants any money upfront. They should only make money if they get you a job.
Good Luck

I've been told the same thing.
Good luck with the modeling, i've always wanted to do that but am too height challenged.

Thanks, girls. Yeah, I'm hoping my height is considered more "average" in the modeling world (which, face it, is not as logical as the real world :p). It's not like I have to roll up standard length pants, so here's hoping.

LoL I'm a shortie too. 5'1. :unamused: But I've never pursued modeling... Not really my thing.
Although I came REALLY close to submitting pics to Suicide Girls. (I love Suicide Girls!)
They aren't picky about body type, etc (except you have to have tattoos and piercings) But being topless in some photos is a requirement for them... so I chickened out. :)
Anyway good luck with everything! :D

I've thought about doing that a few times as well! Not sure I could do it though. Yeah, naked pix for my husband are one thing, but do I really want the world to be able to see?! Not really! haha
A friend of mine is about 5'1" and she began modeling about a yr and a half ago. She started by looking for photographers on modelmayhem.com who were looking for people to do free shoots to add to their portfolio's. In return she would also get the pictures for her portfolio. She then would look for castings on that same website or on other sites and would show up with her extensive portfolio in hand. Now she has been doing local runway gigs, in boston and new york! She also has made it up so fast because she does freelance work if its worth it, so that always looks good! I doubt that she will ever make it onto high-fashion runways because those people dont have any leniency for people under 5'8" but she is having fun and making some extra cash!! So If I were you I would start by having upcoming photographers take some pro bono shoots for you and go from there. W/O a portfolio you cant really do anything u kno....
Good luck! If you do end up getting some gigs let us know! We'd like to hear about it!
Edit:
I found her profile on model mayhem... She totally BS'd on her height but hey thats how she'd getting gigs, just get the tallest stilettos u can find! ;)

That sounds like a similar deal to One Model Place, the site I put up a profile on. I was looking for those kinds of shoots, but that was before I lived in Chicago, so I wasn't used to the city yet. Now that I am, I'd probably be more likely to hop all over gigs if they seemed like they were in a good area. It's good to hear that it can actually work out that way! :)
I have also considered trying to get some shots for SG (before they became HUGE), but my piercings aren't readily visible and I don't have my tattoo anywhere near designed yet, much less actually financed and inked :p Someday!

I am 5'10" but have hips. I "was" in the biz, but for a very short time. I am a size 12 and curvy, so due to that I was in the "plus size" category. It becomes very difficult and challenging in a sense that when you go to a casting call everyone in the room looks very similar to you. I did a couple things for Aveeno and Dove, nothing major. Was out after that. I was a part of MTM (Model Talent Management) located in Langhorne, PA. Overall, I disliked how fake it was.

i love photographing models... and would love to get into a more 1 on 1 perspective photo shoot then going to car shows and just start shooting pics of random chicks in poses
But i got a cousin in florida who is 5'4 and is going to being doing modeling stuff. Which i am excited for her! and maybe if she gets better at it and knows names i can pass them on to you
but the thing i realize with you ladies if you wanna do modeling work as stated before you need a portfolio.
and this doesn't mean catwalks and high end fashion.
This means a random photo shoot in a location or in a building setup for the shoot. having a few shots done of you in various poses.
Don't be afraid to try different things. From casual everyday wear (ya know t shirt and jeans or whatever) shots to all the way down to bikini/bra and pantie shots.
Best and easiest route in is car show modeling. Straight up. You don't really have to be trained or anything... just have a decent body and a cute face and know how to smile and your in.
Fashion modeling is i bet very very hard to go straight to unless a Scout finds you and likes your look. or if you fill that need (most fashion models are 5'7-6'1 and fairly thin with a certain cheek bone structure that people are looking for. Yes they pick you also on how your face is structured).
As for suicide girls. I don't think theres a tattoo and peircing rule on there. I think i have seen some girls who have none of those. But nudity is a must of course.
And the best part about that group... the girl who runs it... Went to college 10 miles from me :D
Some random shots i've taken at car shows

Also best thing you can do... take some decent shots of your self.... send em out to photographers and everything and ask if they can use you in projects and go from there

those photos came out reallllly good! i like the last one best. she has on a cute dress, too
one of my best friends in nyc was a model. she spent her days going to casting calls - one after another - and got sick of constantly being criticized, people telling her she was too old, fat or her face too wide, etc. she was 20 when she heard the "too old" comment, and 5'8" and 115lbs and her agency wanted her at 90 lbs. not surprisingly, she wound up with some mental issues, stopped eating altogether and somehow subsisted off of cigarettes and vodka, and then cocaine(became an addict), went nuts for a while, went to rehab and now is out of the business. but she used to do cosmetics commercials and print stuff (ads, magazine shoots, billboards) b/c she was too short for runway work. it really put her through the grind. it's not as easy as it looks! and i tell you, she's absolutely gorgeous and i'm not saying that b/c i'm her friend. walking down the street, people would stop to look at her and men were falling over her, but she still kept hearing that she was too ugly, too this, too that in her line of work and after a while she believed it.
i had another friend who was a punk model. he's really into industrial but had a ton of tats and piercings and a mohawk. he did random print stuff over here and in japan and had some bit parts playing a skin head in various movies. it was nice money on the side but nothing he could make into a full-time career.
from their experiences, i think it's easier to get into modeling if you're really young (like 13 or 14). but if you're going for a certain look, you may have more luck. however, if you want to be a real "serious" model, don't get any tats b/c it's going to hurt your chances of getting picked unless you go nuts with tats and you make that your signature look b/c sometimes designers like the contrast against couture. piercings are easier to get away with b/c you can take them out and it doesn't take much to conceal the holes. if you are looking to be a punk model, i think you can get away with more (height, weight, body mods) but there can be less work available.
i can't speak for the motorsport modeling stuff b/c i don't think standard rules of runway and print modeling apply to that area.

motorsports modeling is actually called "Glamour Modeling"
its more free style then anything.
You do car shows/fashion/adverts/magazines/videos/random photoshoots for photographers ect ect ect
you don't make as much money in that field vs super model or straight up fashion modeling. but i bet you have more fun that way.
Glam models don't have to look a certain way.. they don't have to be a certain height or weight or fit into a certain size dress or top or pants or wear certain size heels. or whatever.
You can be sexy in your own way.
And thats horriable about the NYC friend becoming a addict.
But alot of these girls do that sadly.
You look at the fashion models...
they are like 5'9 and 90 pounds (which imho for you ladies is unhealthy. infact remembering health books from high school if i remember right 5'8 like you said your friend is healthy weight is like 120-125 pounds)
So these models go out and 2 finger in the mouth it after they eat... Stop eating for days at times...
i mean they are so picky even girls with average sized breasts can't even become models for most companies cause they basically want a stick that can walk.

she probably was.
usually when theres a group of girls like this.. usually 1 ends up being the newb. and that one could also be just a real good friend of the other one and that other one got her in and told her all she had to do was hand out flyers and smile and look pretty and the other girl would do all the posing work.

If anyone is looking to build their portfolio and for a good cause, the first week of next month (I'd have to ask Anthony), but they're putting together a calendar for Cars4Cancer over in NY if anyone is interested and they'll have a professional photographer there. To be honest, anyone can be a model, I've got a couple girls started in the business and they aren't that tall at all, and one was on the larger side too (yes, I guess you could call me connection man *shrug*)...

Well you want to play Tyler... Remember Electra?
For those who don't know, Tyler and I went to R.A.V.E. and Electra car show (put on by AfterFX) and one of my friends came along for the ride. Her name is Kim and she basically went along for the fun of it and to "pose" with my suby, but we had a little fun...
Just a pic of her with the car...

you definately dont have to be tall to be a model...heres a few pics from a shoot from last weekend. the girl is like 5'3 so anyone can be just takes confidence and being comfortable in front of the camera

Camera angles and the way you position the model helps a lot too. In the photo above you wouldn't think she was 5'3 because the position she is in makes her legs look super long.
That is a very good shot!

^^ What hips?! You are perfect Jenny!
Now I could have got into the biz years ago if I had been more confident and told them to screw my height. But I lacked the confidence. Now I have more confidence, but I have put on weight and had three kids, messing up my perportions, specially in my hips. Damn 9lb baby! haha
