View Full Version : Thinking about painting my wheels...

Here's the situation as it stands:

I had to decide whether I was going to keep my car as it is now (05 RS) with no further mods and save my pennies for something better OR

continue to spend money on mods for my car and not get a new car anytime soon.

I decided to stop spending money on mods and keep my car as is. In lieu of buying new wheels, I am thinking about painting them. I've never been big on traditional wheel colors, so I want to do them dark blue.

The catch: I started a new job last December as a supervisor at surgery center. I already have trouble with getting respect because everyone thinks I'm just a young dumb girl. Most people don't "get" colored wheels, especially non-traditional colors.

I'm not all about what other people think, but this is different because it's my career. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Here's the link (http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=30&sid=7251830)to the paint choice. It's a metallic dark blue.

I can't vote b/c I'm to swayed by both. I currently work at a Subaru dealership and while I may get teased for my pink winters, no one REALLY judges me career wise.

I'm looking to get into real estate and pink wheels aside, my wrb wrx is a little too boy racer for the profession even with my gold bbs(imho). I love my car and I totally believe in individuality and not doing for others, but I'm very consious of what I can afford and get for a second car as a daily driver that fits the "professional bill" a bit more.

I think that this blue paint you picked out is so dark it will look black from a distance and really it isn't so "go big or go home" in a flashy sense.

Hope that helps! And good luck!

^+1 :) That color isn't a big deal at all; I doubt it will even be noticed.

I'm in the same boat- I have an important job (a creative director) & I'm 24. My car is very flashy. Nobody really notices or cares. It's really about my professionalism & work ethic doing my actual job.

I think you should do whatever you want to your car, and your respect will be gained over time once everyone sees that you take your job seriously & are good at it :)

I voted do it. I feel that visually modding your car has more to do with personailty than career goals. Most people won't think too much on it. Im sure there will always be those few bunch of haters that will look down upon it, but those are the people who feed off of sh*t talking, they will always be there blue wheels, or not, but as long as you do what is needed in your work place, no one can say anything about what you drive.

Well thanks ladies. I had my mind 95% made up, but you pushed it the other 5 :)

There's still one percent of me that doesn't want to have to hear all the comments, but really, it shouldn't reflect on my work. I'm a hard worker, I take pride in my work and I do a really good job. If they don't like it, they can take a walk

Maybe I'll have this done by photoshoot time... Make a not so exciting little RS just a little more exciting!

oooo, I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet haha and if I did a crazy color it would def be pink. That way it would match my hello kitty sticker :)

I vote do it too!! PS check and see if anyone powdercoats in your area. I had a set of wheels powdercoated a few years back and they hold up to road debris muuuch better!

I've def debated getting more stickers, just haven't gotten around to it :) Have def debated going pink too. Let's start with blue and work our way up

I've looked in to this for sure. Since these are only my stockers, I'm just going to do it the cheap way. When I get a decent set of wheels (and a decent car) then it's def something I'd consider. Thanks for the advice

i said do it!! I understand what you are saying about being professional, but i feel that as long as you are doing your job well (which it seems you must since you are a supervisor), that it shouldnt matter what car you have.

Thanks guys :)

I have plans to get my tires put on sometime this week and then painting will occur on Sunday. I have my BF to help me who has done his wheels before so that should def help (he's already made all the mistakes on his car ;)

He bought this nifty adapter that fits on the spray can that's a squeeze trigger - he said it really helped the second time he did his wheels. Has anyone else used anything like this?

Spend the money (not much) and get it, it'll make it easier for you.

Looks like you're doing it - good for you. Don't be swayed by "your career" in terms of cars you've got. Anyone who judges you based on your car... well... what is this, high school?

Think of it this way, what if you had a BMW (or luxury car of your choice)? Then would you be judged because now you're making "too much"? Or what if you drive a rusted hoopty?

I know people don't mind being up to their eyeballs in debt just to have a car that they think projects a certain image, and people who do pretty well and drive rusty pick up trucks...

If anything, a funky car (however you define it) could be a point or topic of conversation - who knows?

DO IT!! I did my wheels purple and love them and their pitted goodness. (need to get crackin on touching them up). I don't think people will judge you. Plus it is YOUR car.

Haha, nice. There's a guy around here who has a blue bugeye WRX with pink wheels. He doesn't seem to mind it at all ;)

Thanks!! I'm starting to really love them. It's great to see people's face when I drive by... It's like they stop paying attention to driving and pay more attention to my wheels. I just hope no one hits me b/c they're distracted!

They look great Michelle! It takes a bit to get used to, but if you decide you don't like it - you can just paint them again!

I get more attention to my pink wheels now that it's nice out. But you won't get to see them in person, goldies are going on Friday afternoon. :D

Aw nuts, I was looking forward to the pink :p

I think I'll leave them for a while. If I change anything, we might add a darker top coat to make them a little less obnoxious, but we'll see!

Some kids in a car gave me fake gang symbols and bobbed there heads, and said something like, "What up homey." Could be kids being kids, or the wheels attracting attention... like you, the snows gotta go, and summers gotta go on!

No I have adult guys saying "sweet rims" and seeming to appreciate a female's clear interest in cars. Also little kids get excited. Even adult women drive by and smile/try to catch up so their passengers can see.

Just because they want to catch up to see, doesn't mean they care. ;)

I get, "Look at those cute wheels." (from kids...)

Darn it!
