So I live alone in my house, gets pretty dull at times and the bar is starting to suck. I figured I would buy a dog, I was a previous owner of a Belgian breed of a dog whom she is doing competition now and no longer own her.

I'm looking to adopt a dog, I can't freaking decide what to do and it's killing me, I wish I could buy both but I can't afford it and can only care for one.

Help me out, haha

:love:My husband & I have had 2 pit bulls/amstaffs and they are great family members. We had a full amstaff named Pennywise who was about 100lbs - he was an amazing dog, very loyal & very good with other animals, kids & adults - he passed away from old age a couple years ago & we were heartbroken. Then we decided to get Deegan - he was a full blue pit bull and he was 90 lbs by the time he was 7 months old. People were scared of him because of his size but he wouldnt hurt a fly! I think we heard him bark maybe 4 times his whole life & never ever any growls. He was awesome with our son & everyone else! Pit bulls are very smart & very loyal dogs, great companions & mostly big lap dogs :) Sadly Deegan passed away in January due to some stomach related issues (he ate a screw off the porch & it destroyed his insides). I can't stress enough how awesome it is that you would consider adopting a pit bull & giving him/her a chance - so I give you mad props!!! :D

Get an irish wolfhound! Used to have one but she died at age 11. They're amazing, huge but soooo sweet, she even let my little cousin climb on her and when my little cousin actually bit her she turned around and licked her face. And they'll scare the poop out of anyone.

I'm going to try and run out tomorrow, I'll take some pictures and post back. I was planning to see Tiny this weekend. I emailed the rescue place and they're going to try and take pictures. She has a black face with little socks (They look like socks to me) on her front paws.

Superwomanchick, how did you clean up the remains from a dog like that? Snow shovel?

if this were my decision, i'd go with tiny because she's all ready spayed, has her shots and has been living with a foster family so you know she's used to people. that's just my opinion though.

Are you looking specifically for a Pit? I know of a couple rescues in NY.

Looking for a protection breed dog, something to watch. My mali was probably the best dog I had. Several times I've had people stop and look at my car here and I know one of my neighbors down the road has had his STI stolen. She'd always wake me up when people were to close and I'd have to get up and check it out. Some dude was in my driveway walking towards the garage when I stepped out and asked him he was doing. Of course my dog was showing aggression towards him.

Yet I need something that is family specific as well but I'm sure I can train if needed.

They were sold, I know ashlee is gone but Tiny is still there but apparently she is sold. I told the lady to let me know if she goes or not.

Have you thought about a great dane? I have a neice-dog. She is really sweet but also very protective of us. The moment she hears anyone outside she will get up and go to the door and start barking. The UPS guy is even scared of her bark. She has a mean sounding bark! We take her for walks a lot and I feel pretty safe with her because people see this huge black dog and they stay away.

Yea, Pit Bull's are not great "guard dog's". They are more loyal to families and very docile towards other people. They have a very bad rep and due to their breeding purpose have that negative stigma. Unfortunately, they were bred towards fighting other dogs, not to watch or protect. They look more aggressive then they really are. My Pit Bull is lazy and sleeps all the time. Often times could care less who is at the door or near the house. Great with children and people, and luckily very playful to other dogs. I would look into the breeds posted above, and my addition would be a Rottweiler, German Shepherd, or Doberman Pinscher. Very active and high energy dogs so will need time, effort, and training most definitely.

Pitbulls are actually a protection breed. Not a lot of people utilize them because their bite work is hard to get them off. For instance the Mali's don't tunnel vision into the opponent. The Pitbulls tend to do this and it's hard to get them out. I've never worked with one but that' is what I've heard from breeders. I just want a alert dog that will part and zip it when I say so. We'll see, I actually wanted a dutch shepherd. Dogs are far from weak sauce but will see, I'm just checking out the pounds around here and hopefully will find a nice dog. I've been looking at the german shepherd here, looks like a wolf kinda.

Any dog can be trained to bite a person, but with a Pit Bull and their already negative stigma, that dog will be put down no questions asked if it even nips at someone. I tend to stay away from breeder's of Pit Bulls because they charge a lot and also breed for that stacked look (where the dog looks like it has roid rage lol). This is very unhealthy and not natural. I am not saying all breeder's are like this, bust most are. They can also resort to incest to keep the blood line pure, again health issues develop.

A Pit Bull's natural nature is docile and eager to please. Many dogs have that "tunnel vision" it's also called the "red zone". You really don't want any dog to exert any behavior to where they reach this point, because then the handler loses control. I have dealt/trained many dogs with a wide variety of breeds. I use to have a German Shepherd/Husky mix and he was the best watch/guard dog. He was very high energy and challenged my "Alpha" status often. I had to run him until he gave up or take him dog parks for hours to wear him out.

So I bought her, she is very laid pack.. she likes to run around the house and see what's going outside the windows, I took a few days off work so she can get use to the place. She slept straight through the night and loves food(wont eat her dog food though). She is like a huge baby though.. I let her sleep in my bed last night and she slept by my feet, this morning she creeped up and looked at me... creep some more and started to cry. haha.

I'll take some pictures! So far has been great, loves people and playing with cats!

Well the training is going good, she sits, lays shakes and heels(kinda) Leash training is easy, she stays right at my side. Only thing we need to work on is she gets way to excited and wants to give people kisses. Sadly a lot of people run away because she's a "pitbull" Good thing most people come right up to her.

We used to give our pit bull nylabones - they are very tough and they are not harmful to the dog. We found that the rope toys were ok for a while but they did not hold up for more than a week after that he would pull parts off of them & eat them causing a back-up if you know what I mean! The other toy that is really good for powerful chewing is a Kong - they make them in all sizes - they are very tough and last a long time. Hope that helps & we would love to see some pics!!

i have 2 corgis and they go through toys like no one's business too. anything made of reallllly thick rubber should do the trick... like christine said, kong makes a really good toy. our dogs love it when we put peanut butter on them so they can lick it off. your pup looks sooooo adorable, thanks for the pics.

Yeah, I actually bought her a Kong toy today, It lets treats out, she goes nuts over it and I think it's her favorite toy now. If it's not that it's this Wal-mart toy I bought her which has been holding up really good. It's called "Squid" and has a rubber ball with a squeaker. She loves that but the kong takes the cake. She can't get enough, haha.

Brindle Pit! My favorite, she seems like an absolute doll I am glad you were able to rescue. The uneducated will be very weary to come near her even though she could be the most docile and harmless creature in the world, get used to it. Compared to other Pits, my guy is a runt (~50lbs) people will literally walk across the street to avoid him. He is the biggest pansy and is deathly afraid of boxes.

Do you know her history at all? Like any dog there are things you should take into consideration and be very careful. Even though she is a total sweetheart she could have a trigger. Just be aware of any signs of aggression, they are always there. Good luck with the training!

P.S. My 8lb cat picks on/beats up my Pit ALL the time. She is such a bitch...lol

I don't know her history sadly, I know she was beat though. I was weeding my garden and I went to pickup a tool and she cowered. I threw the tool on the ground and told her "It's ok" started petting the tool and she came over and sniffed/lick it. Now she doesn't mind if it's "That" tool. She cowered with the shovel and rake so I'm assuming she was beat. When she was in the pound I guess the guy couldn't afford her so he had to let her go. From there she was fostered but sadly the guy was getting so many dogs in he couldn't keep them. I assume she had a shitty life moving around all over.

Like all things dogs keep coming so they have to push the unwanted ones out. Which is crazy. She is a big baby, lap dog which I don't mind. She loves giving kisses. She loves people but I know she would run away if I let her off leash. She doesn't know what's going to happen to her and I've only been with her for about three days now. She still won't eat anything, I've put chicken and rice in her food and she won't touch it. Last night she did eat her can dog food so I was happy about that. She always eats table scraps though. She loves cats and dogs, she was laying in the sun and this cat was swatting her tail, so funny. She gets very nippy when we play, she made teeth and skin contact with me but she backed off. I don't know what makes her snap yet, I still think she is in the unknown state as what is going to happen to her.

I'm waiting for her paper work to see what her background is and what not.

BoostinChick
04-14-2010, 09:34 AM
That's good, hopefully you do get more of a background. Did you set up a vet appointment yet? Not eating could be the sign of some sickness especially if she wasn't into the chicken/rice. May also take a few days for her to get settled into her new environment, especially if there are trust issues. Just take it slow/easy and don't rush. You seem to have a good knowledge and know what you are doing. There are many forums/online readings specifically pertaining to the Pit Bull breed, so if you are unsure of a behavior or want to learn about brindles, there is enough info out there to get you going.

Again, glad to see that you rescued and that she found a permanent home!

Yoshi wouldn't eat when we first moved into our place so we ended up putting a raw egg in with his food and he would gobble it right up! We find that when either of our dogs aren't eating, adding a little treat to their food really helps.

Congrats on the new addition!
Getting my last rescue to eat once home included adding canned food. If she is eating the canned, you may be able to wean her onto dry by mixing. Our guy was spoiled in that we moved from mixing in less and less canned food to just adding in a little warm water with each meal. It helps with digestion too, but he quickly came to expect it every time. It doesn’t cost anything extra though once the canned food is cut out.
Hopefully the vet gives her the thumbs up.

Yeah I brought her over but he still shunned her, not much I can say. Apparently everyone is complaining according to him but there is much larger breed dogs out there. I ran into a a girl that has a 101LB german shepherd that she can barely hang onto. She told me she can only walk him at night because she hates people. He's scared about a 40lb pitbull, I'd be scared about a 101lb german shepherd. Don't they know there are more dangerous dogs in the neighbor hood. It's just because of the breed honestly, but right now she's freaking awesome. So suck my junk.

 So I haven't even had Miny my dog for more than two weeks and everyone in my neighborhood is complaining about her because she's a pitbull (Actually took her to the Vet and she's a Irish Stafford Terrier)FYI, Pit Bull = Stafford shire Terrier

Knowledgeable vets usually tell you when you register the dog within your county/township and home owner's to use this breed name. If you go with "Pit Bull", your insurance company can drop you for being a high liability and your township may send you additional paperwork (like a promissory note) that you will put the dog down if she ever bites anyone. You will get the stigma from the ignorant and people don't realize that ANY dog can be aggressive and ANY dog is capable of biting. Like they say "Blame the deed, not the breed". I live across the street from a community center, I exercise my guy a lot. He goes on a lot of walks and is familiar with his surroundings. I usually bring him around groups of kids young enough to not know what the breed is, they just want to pet him. I know my dog so I know that him being in large groups is okay. I do this often so the older children and their parents are comfortable around my dog (I would not suggest this until you are 100% confident in yourself as a handler and with the dog). I have actually had a small >10lbs toy growl and nip at him and my dog ran like a little beyotch.

Yeah we did, she loves her crate so I've been using that. I'm going to have my sister pickup one at petco it's bigger so she can move around. Getting a large crate that she will be able to move around in freely is a mistake. With the separation anxiety it more or less leaves room for her to go to the bathroom or tear up bedding.

Yeah, the vet just told me people call them pitbulls because the breed is so huge. British, American, Irish and yadda yadda. I thought I was a pretty good neighbor and thought I did a good deed. I guess if you do something good you always get shit for it. I brought my dog over last night and show them she's not aggressive and in fact loves people. It still didn't help as he said, "we'll she'll snap and kill someone you just wait." Just drives me nuts and aggravates me that the breed is condoned like this and there is nothing you can do. If my insurance drops me or goes up I don't know what I'll do. When I went to the library and did research on the breed, all the books tell you that these are the best dogs to get. They love humans, even when their owners beat the shit out of them they still love humans. I didn't even look on the internet, but now that I'm searching around all you hear is pitbulls are so dangerous. I just feel like shit because of what the breed holds in peoples minds.

Yeah, the crate she's in now she can stand in, turn around and what not. She likes to bury her raw hides I give her under the blanket and then uses her nose to to hide it ever so neat.:)

She likes to bury her raw hides I give her under the blanket and then uses her nose to to hide it ever so neat.:)They are very good dogs and very forgiving. The problem lies in what they are bred for. It's the nature's hierarchy type approach, where you take one champion dog mate it with another champion dog (or even incest) and you get all these biological problems that can show mentally and physically. Think of it this way...you have a friend, he get's into a scrap with some guy at the bar mouthing off. Your friend gets heated and gets tunnel vision and just starts pummeling this guy. Your friend is so enraged that anyone that comes near him to pull him off the dude get's hit. Similar scenario, usually dog bits happen when someone who has no idea what they are doing attempts to physically grab and separate two fighting dogs, the more aggressive dog (which still feels threatened) zones in on the new "aggressor". Pit Bulls (by nature) usually have more aggression towards other dogs than people. That's why it's a big NO-NO to bring Pit's to a dog park.

Here is some info (just in case) - http://www.pitbullforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79642

^ I purchased on of those as a safety. I have practiced that method with my dog and it's fool proof. In general that is a great forum to join, full of info and catered to owner's with Pit Bulls.

Nice I will read that tonight and sign up! Yeah I'm actually more scared of the rottweilers and German shepherds around just because they lash out at people. The other day a lab and a rottweiler got into a fight and I couldn't believe it, I think the owners were more shocked as to what started it.

This is why a lot of insurance companies specify what type of breeds you are allowed to own. They are considered a high "liability". Hell, people sue when they hop people's fences to rob them, and slip on the pool edge because it wasn't gated.
