View Full Version : What Downpipe are you running, and why?

Hi All,

I'm curious what DP you use and why? Is it a Bellmouth design? Divorced flow? Catted or catless? What's the brand? Why did you choose the one you chose?

Downpipe upgrades are one of the easiest, cheapest, and most fruitful upgrades available. I have my own preferences, but I haven't bought yet so I'd love everyone's input.

Thanks,

Nicco

MadDad DWG Catted DP

1.) I get visual inspections in PA
2.) I got it used for a pretty sweet deal
3.) From what I read, the DWG seperates the exhaust gas exiting the downpipe, creating a smoother exhaust flow
4.) MadDad's products are awesome!

1) I won it at a car event!
2) Bellmouth (I think)
3) Catless (I should have asked to upgrade to a high flow cat/paid the difference - but not issues yet with zee law)
4) Maddad
5) As above, Maddad offers good products. I was catless before and was happy to upgrade my whole exhaust b/c I won the down pipe. :D

Is the MadDad somehow very stealthy? I live in California, where we also have visual inspections, and a DP that could pass would be very enticing.

MA emissions laws are pretty much right behind CA and I haven't had any problems yet.

Thanks! I probably shouldn't worry too much, because out here a 2010 car doesn't have to be smogged until 2016... I'm more worried about having to take it off quickly if I have any warranty problems (and need to visit the dealer) - the car is only five or six weeks old.

I feel like things like exhaust are pretty forgiving at dealerships when it comes to warranty.

HKS Catless 3" non bellmouth. I have it because some guy wanted to swap for a factory DP even up due to moving to Colorado and having emissions checks

I wish I shared your confidence. On the other hand, I really don't have any experience to suggest you aren't right. Maybe I should slyly discuss it with my local dealer to get a sense of their position, because I sure would like to replace the DP.

Thanks for your input.

If theres a big enough failure, I've heard of some dealerships denying stage 2 WRX/STis anything. But ya never know.

Me? Invidia V2 Catless downpipe. Because the divorced wastegate was too expensive and so was the catted version :p

I also didn't start modding my car until it was almost out of warranty... but most of the people I know seem to be lucky too. Maybe it's where we live?

I don't doubt it. I mean technically anything/everything is supposed to void warranty.

The tunes on the newer Subaru suck, especially the late 06 and 07 models. I would think about getting a AP and just putting stage 1 on the car myself. I hate the dealers to be honest, I went to get a oil change because it was free... the dude left my oil cap off, the dip stick was on the intercooler. They never changed my filter because I had a WIX on there. I never left the parking lot that night after I checked everything over and had the manager outside. I made him give me the oil so I can change it myself and I got a 12 pack of oem filters from the moron. RAWR:mad:

No pride what so ever, I could have been stuck on the road with serious motor damage.

I have the Crucial Racing down-pipe which they don't sell anymore back when Mr X had the company here in VA. I got it when I got my Crucial Racing up-pipe (which still needs installed after like 4 years.)

It is quite larger than stock and has a hi-flow cat. Unfortunately, I have not had the car for a full year yet so have not received an official inspection. I can report back once I do though. Although in PA, for newer cars, all they really do is plug into the ODBII port and scan for codes + visual inspection. If your cat was missing or removed there would be a CEL. The visual inspection is more for the tires, brakes, suspension components, so you don't roll out of the shop and your wheels fall off.

If you want to play it safe go with the catted Invidia DP. it really doesn't matter if its BM or divorced. I'm sure theres some sort of power/efficiency gain, but honestly i don't think you would ever notice the difference.
California is extremely strict on emission. If i were you id go catted, unless you're willing to swap your OEM DP every time you get emission done.

Cobb catted downpipe used off of a friend for 2/3 list price in excellent condition.

Heard both catless and catted Cobb DP in person and didn't want that much noise. With the catted DP, the cops don't give me a second look. Also, the exhaust from catless version stinks a bit more than the catted version.

Fitment is excellent as well - not even close to a/c drip-tube; lined right up with rear bracket; does not rub or hit any other items, such as engine, transmission, body, crossmembers, etc.; remainder of exhaust system is also Cobb and that has a nice fit too.

Have emissions in CT and State/Local do perform random checks every now-and-again. I am also due for first emissions test this coming August.

I also didn't want to deal with any boost-creep or CEL issues with a catless DP.

If you get a decent tune, you won't have CEL or creep issues.

Yes, I eventually figured this out after-the-fact. :)

I don't think however that I'll go to a catless downpipe. I figure that since I have a WRX and probably will only add a turbo next-year and not touch the engine and that I don't want it to be too loud, I'll leave it.

SRS catless downpipe. It was cheap and for being cheap it went in really well. The fitment was perfect. It would have only taken an hour or so to install, BUT, moron that i am forgot an o2 sensor socket.

I took my car to get inspected earlier this month and it passed, even though it is completely catless. The car is really loud but i've yet to get pulled over.
