Unfortunately, although the US has been the place for manufacturers to sell cars, and thus make the most profits, Americans in general don't want or appreciate the 'sports car'. Most Americans want show over go.

As a friend of mine put it, most Americans buy poorly built cars that are shiny outside and have a kick-ass stereo inside. All show and no-go.
