Story:

If you live in a rural area, odds are you've had that heart-sinking feeling that comes along with hitting an animal with your car. Be it a squirrel, opossum, snake or skunk, no one likes killing another being while driving, an it's made a million times worse by smacking someone's pet. A Chilean driver was recently busting down the local highway when a dog ran out in front of his car. After hearing the thud, the driver apparently realized that the chances of survival were pretty slim and took his ride to a local body shop to survey the damage.

Believe it or not, the technicians found one very scared, slightly roughed-up pup nestled behind the broken front fascia. Workers then set about removing the necessary bodywork to get the dog out and to a vet. So far, there's no word on how the dog's doing or if the owner was located, but we're hoping for the best. Hop the jump to see a remarkable video of the pup getting extricated from the grille of the car.

At least he survived broken leg and all :)

Awww what a crazy story. Why wouldn't the guy stop to look for the dog? I mean if I ever hit a pet I'd stop to find it and get it to a vet.

Thats what I thought too when I saw this. He was too worried about the damage to his car that he just drove straight to the shop w/o stopping lol... but i guess he hit him so hard he though it had no chance...

I did the same thing with a rabbit and then not ten miles down the road I almost hit three deer in the middle of the road.

I think that anyone that hits a dog and just runs should be hit with their own car as well. This video is pretty cool as well, another video in Chile, WTF is up with people in Chile...

In South America, this stuff is common and no one cares if they hit a dog or cat. So I'm not suprised they didn't stop. I would have stopped and freaked out! I hit one dog in my life ::knocks on wood:: It was a pug and I barely skimmed his side with my tire. I got out and went into histerics in the middle of the road, even though he was fine. (Didn't help I was 6 months pregnant and the fmaily of the dog was in their yard having a party for their 16 year old daughter's birthday!) I cried for three days, even after going back to check on him the next day.

My Dad hit a dog with me sitting inthe front seat nad I felt it roll under our car, we stopped and the dog ended up with only a few broken bones, suprisingly. From then on, just the thought of feeling the dog rolling under my feet under the car, I could never just keep driving!

I've seen the second video a few times and that is crazy! What animals won't do to help! And some people don't think they are smart of have emotions!

Ive been traumatized from an incident I watched occur back when I was 16 sitting on my friends porch. We saw a cat get hit by a car coming donw the hill. The people stopped and got out. The poor kitty tryed getting up and walking and he kept falling to the side, he had multiple broken bones, his legs were dragging he was a mess. So they made the decision to end his misery and they got back in the car and reversed over him then forward, then recersed, then forward again. I could literally hear the crunching of the bones.. Im almost in tears just telling this story :( .... So now Im so scared to hit anything even a squirrel so that I wouldnt have to make a decicion like that. i mean it prob was the best thing for that kitty, but none the less a sad day in my life...

Omg that is horrible. I would be so miserable. I hate seeing animals die. I worked at petco and sometimes our little critters would die and it was always sad.

^Well it was either that or leave it there to suffer and die slowly. Im sure they weren't thinking of putting it in the car and taking it to a vet to spend hundreds of dollars you know.

I get that. Would a vet put it to sleep for free?

Thats pretty eff'd up even if it is suffering. Why would you need to run it over a couple more times just to end the suffering. I'm sorry I would've done something completely different, but thats just me...

+1. That just seems so cruel and unneeded.

Nope I had to call the other day for a friend of mine who found a cat that had a severe gash/infection/swollen leg. I called and asked if they would euthanizer for free to end this poor things suffering and they said no its $200. I mean I guess you could just leave it outside the door of an animal rescue place, but that could take hour (if dropped off after hours) for them to attend to it. So it would suffer for a long time.

You guys say you wouldn't have done the same if u were in this situation so then what exactly would you do? A cat runs out in front of your car. You hit it. You get out to look and the cat is SEVERLY injured. Now what?

Well luckily here in Sac there are a few animal groups who take injured animals in and depending upon how bad they are, they will either put them to sleep or try and fix them. One of my friends saw a dog lying in the middle of the road once still alive and she called the city animal control and they came and picked up the dog. Not sure what happened after that but she never got charged for anything...

Thanks, yea its nice that we have organizations that are willing to do that. I work next to a park and theres always stray cats running around and we used to have like 20 cats on our property and there was always litters of kittens so we had to call one of the companies and they came down, took them all and spayed or neutered them and released them back into the park...

The other forum that I'm on has a bay area meet and they help raise money for sheltered animals and it usually brings in a couple thousand, which is nice!
