Hey. So the car I bought from my sister has a lot more problems than I thought it did. On top of the heater/ac problem I also need a belt replaced, the power steering pump may be going and I have an exhaust leak. Since I'm giving my sister payments I plan to give the car back to her.
Now in Chelsea I found a 2000 Impreza RS with 163xxx miles on it. They want 1500 obo offer for it. They replaced the head gasket in 2009. The car does burn oil. They also said the passenger side has an allignment issue. I need to know if you guys think the car could have potential and if you think the car has bigger issues than my current car.

I'm pretty sure Subarus burn oil commonly. :shrug: How much oil is it burning? What exactly is an "alignment issue?" Is it a private sale? I'd have a trusted mechanic look at it.
Sounds like you'd be safer with a 2000 over a 95 for a little any way.

you can do better if what we talked about last night is a issue;

if i were you i would go and take it for a test drive. most people will let you do it. keep the windows up and just listen to the car. as sarah said the burning oil is a common thing. leaking is another issue so just look at the ground under where it was parked. also when youre driving it let go of the wheel on a straight stretch of road and test out just how bad the alignment issue is and ask the seller what exactly is wrong. and i would offer like 1300 or so... but honestly if there are truly no major issues that is a good deal.

My old 93 subie wagon used to burn oil like crazy. Nothing really wrong with it, it did that the whole time I owned it (4-6 years). It's actually convenient because you can stretch out oil changes, you just need to make sure you keep an eye on it so you don't run dry. Head gaskets were a common issue and expensive for labor, but if that's been done and done properly, it shouldn't be a major issue.
I agree with Sarah - have a mechanic look at it and draw up a list of work that needs to be done. Add up what needs to be done in the near future and if it's worth it to you, go for it!
It depends on what you are planning to do with the car and whether or not it would be a daily driver. If its not and you have big plans thats a cheap buy
1500 is really cheap for a 2000 Subaru, even with such high mileage... Be careful with this one... Def have amechanic look at it inside and out. Have you seen it yet? Any rusting/rotting to the body?

i agree with having a mechanic look at it. My legacy was burning a little oil, and then within 4 months of noticing that, my turbo blew (second time on the car in 5 years). Good luck with finding the perfect subie for you!

I know this is kinda old, but yes, ALL subie's burn oil, my 06 eats through oil like a kid who hasnt eaten in days. Its just something you have to routinely keep up on, i often check mine every two weeks and have to add a bit, of course it doesnt help that the dipsticks are so stupidly hard to read cause of their bend, so it makes it a tad hard to make out how much it has lost but just keep up with it and you will be fine
